Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 12 Montana Tech 89-82

Career day from Nick Hart isn't enough as the Battlin' Bears fall in Butte Saturday afternoon.

BUTTE, Mont.- The Rocky men outscored No. 12 ranked Montana Tech in the second half, but were unable to overcome a slow shooting start, falling 89-82 in Butte Saturday afternoon.

After hitting 17 three pointers Thursday evening in their win over University of Providence, the Battlin' Bears struggled out of the gate from downtown, shooting only 8.3% (1-12) from deep in the first half. The Orediggers got up 48-35 going into the halftime break by behind 15 first half points from the Frontier Conference's leading scorer, Caleb Bellach.

Rocky came out firing from the locker room, beginning the second half on a 10-2 run to bring the game within five. Kael Robinson went on a personal 8-1 run midway through the half to bring the game within one point. The Battlin' Bears were able to get the Orediggers on their heels, but they could never quite pull ahead, as the Orediggers responded with an 8-2 run of their own to reopen their lead. Tech was able to fight off the last of the Battlin' Bears runs, pulling away in the final minutes to secure a seven point victory at home.

"We had a tough time getting stops tonight." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "We had some good looks in the first half that just wouldn't go and if you're not shooting well you have to lean on defense. Our guys came out and fought back in the second half, shooting the ball better. In the end, we just didn't get enough stops."

The Battlin' Bears were led by a 24 point, 17 rebound double-double from Nick Hart. Hart's 24 points and 17 rebounds are both career highs, while Hart's 17 boards are the most by a Battlin' Bear in a single game this season. Hart also grabbed four steals in the loss.

Maxim Stephens finished with 22 points, five rebounds, and three blocks, while Kael Robinson finished with 19 points. Beau Santistevan also added 14 points and two blocks. Rocky took care of the ball very well, only turning the ball over five times, but never held a lead in the ballgame.

The Orediggers were led by 21 points and nine rebounds from Calleb Bellach, while Chrishon Dixon added 15 points and three assists. The Orediggers had five players score in double figures.

The Battlin' Bears (12-12, 4-8 conf.) will return home for their final home game of the season Thursday, February 9th against MSU-Northern.
