Career High From Stephens Halts Streaking Lights as Rocky Men Win 71-58

The Battlin' Bears take the season series over MSU-Northern with their win on Senior Night.

BILLINGS, Mont.- Maxim Stephens poured on a career high 30 points as the Battlin' Bears thwarted MSU-Northern's five game winning streak, winning 71-58 Thursday evening.

The offensive fire power of both teams was on display in the first half, as both teams shot over 50% from the field going into the break. Jesse Keltner was a force in the first half for the Lights, scoring 19 points on 7-8 shooting from the field to help MSU-Northern out to a 40-36 lead going into the halftime break.

The Battlin' Bears were locked in to begin the second half, starting things out on a 7-0 run to force an early timeout from MSU-Northern as Rocky took the lead back. The second half then quickly became the Maxim Stephens show, as Stephens tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds in the second half alone, outscoring the Lights by himself in the half and leading the Battlin' Bears to a double digit victory at home.

"At halftime all we talked about was defense and how we needed to come out with more intensity." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "I thought that made all the difference in the world for us in the second half. Once we got stops, our offense was able to get out in transition and make some plays. We have no time to rest as we have another tough game Saturday at Carroll, so our guys will need to focus and get ready for another big game."

Stephens finished with 30 points and 14 rebounds, while also shooting 11-12 from the charity stripe. Jesse Owens added 10 points and three assists, Nick Hart grabbed five rebounds and three steals, and Scott Malikie added five points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Lights were led by 21 points, five rebounds, and two blocks from Jesse Keltner, while CJ Nelson added 10 points, four assists, and three steals.

The Battlin' Bears (13-12, 5-8 conf.) will hit the road as they take on Carroll College in Helena Saturday afternoon.
