Late Rally Pushes No. 22 Rocky Women Over Tech 59-54

The Battlin' Bears lean on defense, forcing 18 Tech turnovers in their eighth straight victory over Montana Tech

BUTTE, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears trailed in the final three minutes of game time, but a 9-0 run to finish the game gave Rocky a season sweep over the Orediggers.

Gracee Lekvold had another hot start with eight points in the first quarter, helping the Battlin' Bears begin the game on an 8-2 run. Lekvold and Ky Buell each hit three pointers on the first two possessions of the game, leading to a 17-9 lead headed into the second quarter.

Neither team could find much of an offensive rhythm in the second quarter, as the Battlin' Bears only had one field goal made through the first seven minutes of the quarter, while Tech only had three makes up until that point. Both teams made up for it quickly, trading baskets on consecutive possessions, finally leading to a 25-25 tie going into halftime.

More of the same for both teams in the third quarter, as the Battlin' Bears shot only 25% (4-16) from the field in the third quarter, while the Orediggers shot 30% (6-20) to take a slim two point lead heading into the final frame.

Tech's Dani Urick hit one of two free throws with 3:28 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Orediggers a 54-50 lead. Urick's free throw would be the last point scored by Tech in the contest, as the final three minutes belonged to Rocky. The Battlin' Bears finished the game on a 9-0 run, forcing four Oredigger turnovers and hitting all four of their free throw attempts to secure a victory.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 13 points, three assists, three steals, and two blocks by Kloie Thatcher, 13 points, four assists, and three steals from Ky Buell, and 12 point, seven rebounds, and two steals from Gracee Lekvold. The Battlin' Bears only shot 31.7% from the field in the victory, but forced 18 Oredigger turnovers.

The Orediggers were led by 11 points and five rebounds from Dani Urick, while Tavia Rooney finished with a 10 point, 12 rebound double double, also adding four assists and two steals.

The Battlin' Bears (17-7, 9-3 conf.) will host their final home game of the season on Thursday, February 9th against MSU-Northern.
