Battlin’ Bears Fall to Lions 0-1 in Costa Mesa Thursday Afternoon

COSTA MESA, Calif.- Second half offensive pressure from the Vanguard Lions turned into to a 0-1 loss for the Battlin' Bears on Thursday afternoon. 

The Battlin' Bears bottled up the Lions well in the first half, allowing only three shots and none of which were on goal. Emma Lensing was able to get two shot opportunities in the first half, but none of the four shots for the Battlin' Bears found the net as the teams carried a 0-0 tie into halftime. 

Halftime adjustments for the Lions proved to be the difference, as 13 of their 16 total shots came in the second half. Vanguard's Alyssa Fong broke the tie and scored the lone goal in the 61st minute to give the Lions the only score they needed, as they controlled possession throughout the half on their way to the victory. 

Rocky's Mya Maack led with four total shots, including two on goal, while Emma Lensing and Charlize Davis also added two shots each. Goalkeeper Amber Wilkinson saved three of the four shots she faced. 

Vanguard's Rachel Penick led all players with seven shots, while goalkeeper Jordin Holmquist-Wilder saved all six shots she faced. 

The Battlin' Bears (1-1) will take on Hope International on Vanguard's campus on Saturday afternoon.
