Rocky Volleyball Defeats UHSP and Hope International on Day One of HIU Summer Slam

FULLERTON, Calif.- The Battlin' Bears made it four victories in a row as they defeated UHSP and host school Hope International on Friday in California.

The Battlin' Bears took control early in their match against University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy of St. Louis (UHSP), led by an 11-0 run with Makenna Bushman totaling five service aces and a kill to capitalize the rally, giving the Battlin' Bears an early 13-3 first set lead. Bushman, along with Paige Sawyer, kept the offensive pressure rolling as they cruised to a 25-10 first set victory.

More of the same in the second set, as after the Eutectics jumped to an early 2-0 lead, the Battlin' Bears quickly rallied to take the lead back and would never give it up, as Rocky continued to dominate, taking set two 25-15.

UHSP never bowed out however, as after the Battlin' Bears jumped to a 15-12 lead after a kill from Kaitlyn Wood, the Eutectics rallied off five consecutive points to take a 17-15 lead. Nevertheless, the Battlin' Bears seized control back, as Tiffany Fuhrmann and Liddia Fontaine controlled the net offensively and defensively as the Battlin' Bears closed out a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-15, 25-19).

The Battlin' Bears were led in game one by 10 kills from Kaitlyn Wood, 22 assists from Blythe Sealey, and 23 digs from Brooke Ark

In game two, the Battlin' Bears maintained composure in a close match throughout. It was Bella Bryan in set one closing things out for Rocky, securing four of the last five points on kills to rally the Battlin' Bears to a 25-23 set one victory.

The second set saw both teams tied at 17 apiece, as the Battlin' Bears got a kill from Kaitlyn Wood to give them the lead, then capitalized on errors by the Royals to extend their lead out to 22-17, eventually securing a 25-20 set two victory.

Set three was a back and forth affair throughout with Rocky holding the upper hand, after four straight points secured a 23-20 lead, the Royals dug their heels in, similar to the Battlin' Bears in the second set, capitalized on Rocky mistakes on their way to a 25-23 set three victory to avoid the sweep.

More of the same in the fourth and final set, as neither team was able to create much separation throughout. Madeline Gilder found a rhythm in her serves, carving up back to back service aces helping the Battlin' Bears regain the lead and ultimately extend it to 23-18. Bella Bryan and Rhiannon Nez would stop any Royal comeback chances, as both girls secured kills to give the Battlin' Bears their second win of the day.

The Battlin' Bears in game two were led by 14 kills and nine digs from Makenna Bushman, 41 assists and 15 digs from Blythe Sealey, and 33 digs from Brooke Ark

"I'm really proud of the effort from the girls today," Coach Yang Yang said. "We face two really good opponents tomorrow so we will need to continue playing well to finish this tournament."

The Battlin' Bears will continue play on Saturday in the HIU Summer Slam, as they take on (RV) College of Idaho at 9:00am (MT) and #23 Texas Wesleyan at 1:00pm (MT).
