Rocky Volleyball Finishes the HIU Summer Slam 3-1 After a Split on Saturday

FULLERTON, Calif.- The Battlin' Bears split their matchups against (RV) College of Idaho and #23 Texas Wesleyan on Saturday as they leave California with a 5-3 record overall so far this season.

The Battlin' Bears began the day against (RV) College of Idaho. In a close first set, junior Makenna Bushman took over, spiking four kills for consecutive Battlin' Bears points as they pulled away to a 24-19 lead. After three straight points from the Yotes, the Battlin' Bears called a timeout, regrouped themselves, and found Bella Bryan at the net for a kill and a 25-22 set one victory.

The Yotes found momentum in the second set, jumping out to an 11-8 lead. Both teams began to trade scores, but Bella Bryan began to find a rhythm offensively as she tallied five kills in the set to push the Battlin' Bears up from a 17-17 tie to an eventual 25-20 set victory.

The third set featured dominant net defense from the Battlin' Bears, as after a Blythe Sealey kill gave the Battlin' Bears a 9-7 lead, they would rattle off a run that included four blocks, two College of Idaho timeouts, and 10 straight Rocky points as the Battlin' Bears grabbed an 18-7 lead, which carried them to a 25-15 set three victory.

The Battlin' Bears were led in game one by 16 kills on a .256 hitting percentage from Makenna Bushman, 32 assists and 10 digs from Blythe Sealey, and 19 digs and four service aces from Brooke Ark

The second match featured a top-25 team in Texas Wesleyan University, a group that qualified for the NAIA Opening Round a season ago. In the first set, both teams matched each other throughout, trading two and three point runs all the way to a 24-24 tie. After a Rhiannon Nez kill was followed by a Rams attack error, the Battlin' Bears forced a Texas Wesleyan timeout. Following the timeout, the Rams blocked consecutive attack attempts by the Battlin' Bears and eventually secured a 28-26 set one victory.

Rocky responded in the second set, as Makenna Bushman, Rhiannon Nez, and Bella Bryan had all totaled seven kills each up to that point as the Battlin' Bears broke out to a 17-13 lead. The Rams would respond with two service aces and a rally to bring them up to 23-21. Rocky, led by Makenna Bushman, dug their heels in and rallied to take a 25-23 set victory in the second set.

The third set did not go the way of the Battlin' Bears, as the Rams pounced quickly to a 16-6 lead in the third set. Never letting off the gas, Texas Wesleyan finished a third set victory at 25-10.

The Battlin' Bears rediscovered momentum in the fourth set, as Bella Bryan and Makenna Bushman each had five kills in the fourth set, but the Rams still held control throughout, heading into the home stretch with a 22-18 lead. Both teams traded points, but Rocky's backs were up against the wall as the Rams held a 24-20 lead. The Battlin' Bears rallied together for three straight points, but the Rams were able to secure a four set victory following a timeout, 25-23.

Rocky was led in game two by 14 kills from Bella Bryan, 13 kills from Makenna Bushman, and 32 digs and 13 assists from Blythe Sealey

The Battlin' Bears (5-3) finish the weekend 3-1 in the HIU Summer Slam and will head to Sioux City, Iowa next weekend to compete in the Labor Day Classic, where they will take on #4 Concordia University and #9 Midland University, as well as Dordt University and Indiana University East.
