Rocky Football Falls Late to #10 Carroll College

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears let victory slip away in the final quarter, as Carroll scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to steal the victory in Billings on Saturday.

Carroll began with the ball and got off to a hot start, as Jack Prka connected with Chris Akulschin for 64 yards on the first play from scrimmage to get Carroll deep inside Rocky territory. The Rocky defense put up the wall after this play however, as they contained the Carroll offense and forced a field goal attempt that would miss wide left to give Rocky the ball back.

Luke Holcomb started off hot on Rocky's first offensive drive, as he would complete three passes for 15 yards or more, including a back shoulder pass from 21 yards out to Joseph Dwyer that gave the Battlin' Bears the first lead of the day, going up 7-0.

Both offenses had success in the first half, as Prka threw for 169 yards in the first half, while Luke Holcomb threw for 95 yards, but neither team was able to put up another score in the half, as Rocky held their 7-0 lead going into the third quarter.

After both teams traded punts, Carroll put together a strong drive, getting the ball down to the Rocky 24 yard line, until Wyatt Brusven stripped a Carroll receiver and Brail Lipford scooped the ball up and ran it all the way down to Carroll's nine yard line before he was shoved out of bounds. A penalty on the play forced Rocky back to the 24 yard line, where Austin Drake would eventually hit a 38 yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0.

The Battlin' Bears began to groove on both sides of the ball, as they would get in the Carroll backfield twice on the following possession, as John Aragon and Mason Browning both tallied sacks to force a Saints punt.

On the first play of their next drive, Luke Holcomb and DeNiro Killian Jr. would show off an impressive connection, as a perfectly timed 36 yard pass to the pylon would put Rocky up 17-0 late in the third quarter.

Things began to look grim for the Fighting Saints, as they would fail a fourth down conversion deep in their own territory early in the fourth quarter, which would turn into an Austin Drake 34 yard field goal to push the Rocky lead to 20-0.

Carroll's offense, while down 20-0 with 10:46 remaining, never looked back however, as they first rattled off a 10-play, 75 yard drive, capitalized by a four yard rush by Baxter Tuggle to get on the board, bringing their deficit to 20-7.

A Rocky three-and-out gave the ball right back to the Saints, as Prka would quickly find Carson Ochoa for a 27 yard touchdown to further cut the Rocky lead down to 20-14.

Another second half three-and-out from Rocky's offense proved to be costly again, as Carroll received the ball back with 2:21 remaining. Just four plays later, Prka found Ochoa again for 39 yards and Carroll suddenly had a 21-20 lead.

The Saints' defensive line closed the ball game out, as Rocky would begin their final drive deep in their own territory and Rocky came up empty handed, falling 21-20 on Herb Klindt Field.

Luke Holcomb finished 16 of 27 passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns, being sacked only once on the day. Zaire Wilcox rushed 16 times for 48 yards, while also pulling in a catch for 10 yards. DeNiro Killian Jr. and Joseph Dwyer each grabbed four catches on the day and both had touchdowns. The Battlin' Bears finished with 247 total yards of offense, but only converted three of their 13 third down attempts on the day.

Defensively, Wyatt Brusven led Rocky with eight tackles, including two for loss and a forced fumble. Prince Johnson had seven tackles and two pass breakups. The Rocky defense gave up 407 yards of passing on the day, while holding Carroll to only nine total rushing yards. The Saints dominated time of possession.

The Battlin' Bears (2-1, 0-1 conf.) will be on the road to take on Eastern Oregon University next Saturday, September 23rd. They will then travel to College of Idaho, before returning home to host Southern Oregon University on October 7th for Homecoming.
