Rocky Football Fends Off Eastern Oregon to Win 13-7

LA GRANDE, Ore.- The Rocky defense continued to shine as Rocky leaves La Grande with a 13-7 victory on Saturday evening.

The Rocky offense kicked the game off with a ten play, 84 yard drive that was capped by a nine yard touchdown from Luke Holcomb to Joseph Dwyer to give Rocky an early 7-0 lead. After a Mountaineer three-and-out, the Battlin' Bears continued to drive the ball down the field, as Holcomb found Jack Waddell for 25 yards as Rocky pushed the ball all the way down to EOU's one yard line. The Mountaineer defense stood up at the goal line and Austin Drake drilled a field goal from 19 yards to extend the lead to 10-0.

Luke Holcomb threw for 137 yards in the first quarter, while the Battlin' Bears defense held Eastern Oregon to only 16 total yards.

After a Mountaineer punt to begin the second quarter, the Rocky offense continued to move the ball efficiently with another trip into the Eastern Oregon red zone, but settled for a second short field goal, to extend the lead to 13-0, which they held through the end of the half.

Neither team could get much going during the third quarter. The Rocky defense held the Mountaineers to only one first down during the third quarter.

The Mountaineers mounted their comeback efforts in the fourth quarter, as backup quarterback Tanner Sweek came onto the field in a red zone package and scurried into the endzone with 7:26 left in the game. After a Rocky three-and-out, Eastern Oregon got their opportunity in Rocky territory, but Rocky forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back with 4:05 left in the game.

Zaire Wilcox had a dominant second half in Saturday's matchup, as he found open space to run for 16 yards, pushing the Battlin' Bears into Mountaineer territory. After burning two timeouts, Eastern Oregon got their break, forcing a Rocky fumble to get a final chance to take their first lead of the game. As they did all of Saturday's game, the Rocky defense answered the call, as Prince Johnson broke into the backfield for a sack and John Waddell forced a fourth down incompletion to secure a Battlin' Bear victory.

Quincy Glasper finished the game 18-for-37 for 160 yards on the day, while Jason Grant finished with 15 total tackles and an interception for the Mountaineers.

Luke Holcomb finished 29 for 42 for 279 yards and a touchdown. Zaire Wilcox rushed 24 times for 132 yards, just four yards shy of his career high (136, 2022 vs SOU). Wilcox also caught four passes for 21 yards. DeNiro Killian Jr. finished with eight receptions for 96 yards. Joseph Dwyer also caught 5 catches for 57 yards and a touchdown. The Battlin' Bears finished with 409 total yards offensively, their highest output of the season so far.

Brail Lipford and Jack Cline each led the Rocky with five total tackles. Prince Johnson and Ethan Hurst added a sack, as well as Dakota Sage and Cole Curry combined for another sack. The Battlin' Bears finished with nine tackles for loss on the day, and continued to be one of the nation's top run defenses, holding Eastern Oregon to only 33 rushing yards.

Austin Drake was two-for-two on his field goal attempts, while Wyatt Brusven punted three times for an average of 44.3 yards per punt.

The Battlin' Bears (3-1) will travel to #7 College of Idaho next Saturday, September 30th.
