Rocky Football Falls to #12 College of Idaho 45-21

CALDWELL, Idaho-  College of Idaho rattled off 42 unanswered points and shut the Battlin' Bears out in the second half as Rocky took their second loss of the season.

The Rocky offense clicked at the start of Saturday's matchup, as after Rocky forced a three-and-out from the Yotes, Luke Holcomb found Joseph Dwyer for a 30-yard catch and run to put the Battlin' Bears in the red zone. Holcomb then found Dwyer two plays later on third down in the endzone from 17 yards out to give Rocky an early 7-0 lead.

The Yote's special teams would help pick their offense up, as Caden Cobb returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards into Rocky territory. Kaysan Barnett would keep the Yotes off the board however, as he grabbed his first interception of the season and Rocky would get the ball back deep on their own side of the field.

College of Idaho would still be the next to put points on the board, as a costly Rocky penalty on the next offensive drive for College of Idaho put the Yotes inside the five yard line, but Rocky's defense held strong to force a field goal, as Rocky still held a 7-3 lead in the first quarter.

Rocky's response would be an 11-play, 65 yard drive that was highlighted by a direct snap to John Waddell on a fake punt, where he would scramble for 18 yards to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Zaire Wilcox would break open for a 17 yard gain, then Luke Holcomb would connect again with his high school teammate Joseph Dwyer to give Rocky a 14-3 lead going into the second quarter.

Joseph Dwyer had five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

Rocky continued to dominate in the air, as Luke Holcomb would throw his third touchdown of the half just two minutes into the second quarter, finding Nakeo Thomas on a fade route from 26 yards away to put the Battlin' Bears up 21-3 over the twelfth-ranked Yotes.

The Battlin' Bears had dominated both sides of the ball through the first 17 minutes of the game, with Luke Holcomb throwing eight-of-110 for 113 yards and three touchdowns.

The offensive momentum would come to a screeching halt for Rocky however, as it would be all College of Idaho for the remaining two and a half quarters.

The Yote's Jon Schofield scored three consecutive touchdowns, two on the ground and one receiving, while quarterback Andy Peters would eventually break the game open with a 57 yard rushing touchdown to put College of Idaho up 31-21 in the fourth quarter.

The Battlin' Bears defense had yet to allow an individual rusher over 50 total yards this season, with an NAIA best 33.5 rushing yards allowed so far this season. Quarterback Andy Peters was able to find the creases, rushing for 109 total yards on the day, while also passing for 229 yards and a touchdown.

College of Idaho would outgain Rocky offensively 440 yards to 235. Luke Holcomb finished 12-of-18 for 127 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Junior Graedyn Buell took the reins of the offense midway through the third quarter, throwing eight-of-16 for 62 yards and an interception. Zaire Wilcox finished with 56 total rushing yards, while Joseph Dwyer recorded 10 catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns, all season highs.

Defensively, Brail Lipford and Prince Johnson each recorded seven total tackles. Jasper Djouma finished with 1.5 sacks, while Dakota Sage had a career high six tackles and combined with Djouma for the other half of a sack. Kaysan Barnett added three pass breakups and two solo tackles to his interception on the day.

Wyatt Brusven punted eight times for an average of 39.4, including a long of sixty yards. Brusven also turned three of his four kickoffs into touchbacks. Austin Drake was three-of-three on PAT attempts, remaining perfect on the season.

The Battlin' Bears (3-2) will host Southern Oregon University for Homecoming on Saturday, October 7th.
