Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

#12 Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls 60-51 to #16 Argos

BILLINGS, Mont.- Brenna Linse tallied a career-high 17 points in her second career start, but ultimately the Battlin' Bears fell short at home on Thursday evening.

After entering the second quarter down 21-14, the Battlin' Bears rattled off an 8-0 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a slim lead. Providence battled back, scoring on each of their last two possessions to take a three-point lead going into halftime.

Providence's Ashlee Maldonado could not be denied in the first half, shooting 4-5 from three-point range to tally 18 first-half points. The Battlin' Bears struggled from deep on the offensive end, shooting just 2-9 from deep in the first half. They made up for it with a strong presence inside, outscoring the Argos 16-8 in the paint during the first half. Brenna Linse and Morgan Baird combined for 17 points to keep their deficit at three going into halftime.

After Morgan Baird hit a three-pointer to give Rocky a 36-34 lead, both teams hit a dry spell offensively, combining to go 4-23 from the field for the remainder of the quarter. Gracee Lekvold hit the first field goal in seven minutes to cut the Argo back to four.

Despite Rocky's offensive struggles, their defensive effort kept their hopes alive in Thursday's game and provided them a spark when they needed it. Gracee Lekvold hit a three-pointer and Brenna Linse followed it with a layup through a foul to give Rocky a one-point lead with 5:24 remaining. Another offensive slump would ultimately doom the Battlin' Bears in the end as Providence would rally for a 12-1 run over the next three minutes to secure a nine-point victory.

Brenna Linse led the way for the Battlin' Bears with 17 points and five rebounds. Gracee Lekvold scored 15 and grabbed seven rebounds, while Morgan Baird added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Ashlee Maldonado led the way for the Argos with 33 points and eight rebounds, shooting 7-10 from three in the Providence victory.

The Rocky women (11-3) will look to shake their two-game losing skid when they host MSU-Northern on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at 2:00 pm in the Fortin Education Center.
