Rocky Women’s Basketball Grabs First Conference Win Over #16 University of Providence

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- In her first collegiate start, Madeline Heggem led an offensive surge in the third quarter as the Battlin' Bears earned their first conference win after defeating the No. 16 ranked Argos 58-47.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter, combining for 5-26 from the field as the Argos held a slim 8-7 lead going into the second quarter.

Providence's Maddy Dixon was the first player from either team to find any momentum, scoring on three straight possessions early in the second quarter to extend Providence's lead. The Battlin' Bears would put together a 7-2 run to close out the first half to cut their deficit to four points.

Sophomore Madeline Heggem entered Thursday scoring ten or more points in just one other game this season, but scored 11 of Rocky's 20 third-quarter points, including shooting 3-3 from three-point range, doubling her season total in three-pointers in the third quarter alone. Heggem's third three-pointer gave Rocky a three-point lead headed the final quarter.

Rocky's defense ultimately sealed the victory on Thursday evening, holding the Argos to just 3-13 shooting in the quarter to hold their lead throughout the entire quarter, earning their first conference victory of the season.

Gracee Lekvold led the scoring for the Battlin' Bears with 15 points, adding eight assists, which ties her career high. Madeline Heggem tallied a career-high 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, her first career double-double. Brenna Linse was the third Battlin' Bear in double figures, adding 14 points and six rebounds.

The Argos were led by a game-high 21 points from Maddy Dixon.

The Battlin' Bears (12-6, 1-5 conf.) return home to host Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon, tip-off at 2:00 pm (MT).
