Rocky Volleyball’s Comeback Effort Preserves Five-Set Victory Over Skylights

HAVRE, Mont.—Down to match point in the fifth set, the Battlin' Bears rattled off five consecutive points to secure a victory over MSU-Northern in Havre Wednesday evening.

How it Happened

Bella Bryan paced the Battlin' Bears early in the first set, as five kills through the first frame led the Battlin' Bears to an early lead. Bella Bryan spiked two kills to cap off five straight points for Rocky to close the first set with a 25-22 win.

The Skylights responded with a commanding offensive attack, tallying team hitting percentages of .366 and .244, along with seven combined service aces to take a 2-1 lead following wins in the second and third set.

The Battlin' Bears began to limit their mistakes in the fourth set and let their defense at the net bring them success. Rocky totaled just five attack errors in the fourth set while combining for six blocks and forcing ten Skylight attack errors. Even though MSU Northern would have Rocky at a 26-25 set point, the Battlin' Bears rallied for three straight points to force a fifth set after a 28-26 victory.

MSU Northern would be in the driver's seat for the start of the fifth set, as an early run had them up 8-4. Rocky would battle back, however, as kills from Kaitlyn Wood and Makenna Bushman rushed Rocky to an 11-10 lead. The Skylights would have their answer, as Jessalyn Chvilicek spiked back-to-back kills for MSU Northern to cap a four-point run with the Battlin' Bears on the ropes of a 14-11 deficit. Ultimately, Rocky would make the match-clinching run, as a pair of kills from Makenna Bushman and a block from Gabriella Panzetta would flip the fifth set and secure Rocky a much-needed five-set win over MSU-Northern.

Makenna Bushman led all players with 21 kills on Wednesday evening, along with 21 digs. Kaitlyn Wood added 12 kills and three blocks, Blythe Sealey totaled 49 assists and 16 digs, and Brooke Ark tallied a game-high 39 digs.
