Rocky Football Stifled by Lights 19-13 on the Road

BILLINGS, Mont.- Rocky Football suffered their first loss to MSU-Northern in ten years, falling 19-13 in Havre on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Battlin' Bears were the first to strike in the afternoon, as Graedyn Buell found Joseph Dwyer from 46 yards out on the game's opening possession, giving Rocky a 7-0 lead to open the ball game.

From then on, the Lights controlled possession and the game overall. MSU Northern would get on the scoreboard on the first drive of the second quarter, with Zach Brooks finding Devin Shelton for a 22-yard pitch and catch. The Battlin' Bears would block the ensuing extra-point attempt, holding their lead at 7-6.

MSU Northern would grab a lead just before the end of the half thanks to a one-yard rush from Lucas Thacker. The two-point conversion would fail, keeping the halftime lead at 12-7.

The Lights dominated time of possession in the second half. After Rocky's first drive of the second half ended with a missed field goal, MSU Northern put together a drive that lasted 9:26 of game time, going 16 plays and 80 yards, capped off by a one-yard rushing touchdown by Zach Brooks.

The Battlin' Bear offense eventually showed life, as Graedyn Buell found Jack Waddell from five yards out to cut the deficit to six points. With less than two minutes remaining and no timeouts, Rocky needed an onside recovery to keep the game alive.

Their wishes were answered as Jason Weston's onside kick bounced off a Lights player and into the hands of the Battlin' Bears.

The wind was quickly taken out of Rocky's sails, however, on the second play of their ensuing drive, Michael Watkins would force a Battlin' Bear fumble and secure the MSU Northern win, their first of the season.
