#21 Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls Late to (RV) Arizona Christian

BILLINGS, Mont.- Arizona Christian hit the game-winning shot with 17 seconds left to hand the Rocky women their second loss of the season.

How it Happened

Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with Rocky's defense anchoring their effort, forcing four turnovers early. Arizona Christian was impressively efficient in the shots they could get off, as they finished the quarter 6-9 from the field. Paige Wasson rattled in a three-pointer in the quarter's final seconds to reduce Rocky's early deficit to three, 19-16.

The second quarter was a defensive slugfest, as both teams combined for just 17 total points. Despite shooting woes, Arizona Christian muscled out a 6-0 run over the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 27-25 lead going into halftime.

The Battlin' Bears came out of the halftime break firing from three, hitting four shots from deep, including two from Isabelle Heggem, the second of which gave Rocky an eight-point lead with two minutes remaining. Arizona Christian rattled in a three-pointer to close out the half, limiting Rocky's lead to five going into the fourth quarter.

The game heated up during the fourth quarter, as Halle Payne hit a jumper for the Firestorm to cap a 6-0 lead before Sydney Dethman responded with a three-pointer to give Rocky the lead back at 53-51 with five minutes remaining. Free-throw shooting became crucial down the stretch, as the Firestorm hit 5-6 from the charity stripe in the final three minutes. Alyssa Alvarez's pair of made free throws gave ACU a three-point lead inside the final minute.

After the Rocky defense forced a jump ball to get the ball back with 30 seconds remaining, freshman Paige Wasson stepped into a three-pointer to tie the game at 59-59.

The game's leading scorer, Alyssa Alvarez, would make the game-winning shot on Arizona Christian's next possession, driving the baseline and banking in a tough layup. This ultimately gave the Firestorm the victory after Rocky was unable to get a shot off on their following possession.
