(RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Battles; Falls Late to No. 24 Jamestown 72-65

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Rocky women dropped a wire-to-wire top-25 matchup with the Jimmies 72-65 to open the Green and Gold Classic.

The Battlin' Bears made ten threes in the loss, making it the fourth game this season in which they have made double-digit three-pointers. The defeat is the fourth of the season for the Rocky, snapping a brief two-game win streak with just one non-conference game remaining in the schedule.

How it Happened

Scoring was difficult to come by to open the matchup, as Rocky was held scoreless until Iliana Moran sank a three-pointer at 5:15 in the first quarter. However, the Battlin' Bear defense was keyed in, holding Jamestown to two-of-eight shooting and forcing three early turnovers, keeping their deficit at four.

Paige Wasson ignited the Rocky offense and the home crowd to close out the final five minutes of the first quarter, sinking all three of her three-point attempts and combining for 12 first-quarter points, with a three-pointer to end the quarter, giving Rocky a 20-13 lead going into the second quarter.

The hot shooting first half subsided slightly for the Battlin' Bears, making just two of eight from three in the second quarter. Jamestown's Kate Cordes began to heat up, totaling 14 of the Jimmies' 19 second-quarter points, including back-to-back three-pointers to end the half and cut Rocky's lead down to two going into the half.

After Sydney Dethman scored on the second half's opening possession, Jamestown rattled off a quick 12-2 run to grab their first lead of the game. After the Jimmies extended a lead as large as 11 late in the third quarter, Gracee Lekvold drained back-to-back three-pointers to ultimately cut the Battlin' Bear deficit to three going into the fourth quarter.

Another early 5-0 run for the Jimmies to start the fourth quarter saw the Battlin' Bears face an eight-point deficit before Paige Wasson and Iliana Moran combined to cut the deficit back to three on the next two possessions. While Rocky continued to keep the game within reach, the Jimmies responded over and over again to maintain their lead and ultimately seal Rocky's loss at home.
