Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against #18 Mayville State 84-75

BILLINGS, Mont.- A back-and-forth matchup that featured a combined 57 three-point attempts saw the #18-ranked Comets pull away late to hand the Battlin' Bears their third loss of the season.

How it Happened

Mayville State showcased its high-powered offense throughout the first quarter, draining five threes to begin the game in Billings. Their 27-point first quarter helped cushion a nine-point lead after one-quarter of play.

Turnovers hurt the Battlin' Bears to open the second quarter, as the Comets extended their lead to 14 with under five minutes remaining in the half. The Rocky women kept their heads up and found some much-needed offensive momentum, draining four of their five three-point attempts in the final four minutes. This helped combine for a 14-3 run that closed their deficit to three points at halftime after Angie Cavanaugh drained an NBA-range three-pointer at the buzzer.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter. At the 4:40 mark, a layup by Sydney Dethman following an offensive rebound by Isabelle Heggem gave the Battlin' Bears a one-point lead. Mayville State would look to make a push before the quarter end, as they combined for a 7-1 run over the next three minutes. Still, Angie Cavanaugh would hit another three-pointer to contain Rocky's deficit to three entering the fourth quarter.

To the home crowd's dismay, Mayville State's Mackenzie Hughes put on a show in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 of her game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Comets broke away to secure an 84-75 win over the Battlin' Bears.
