Hot Shooting Skylights Defeat Rocky Women’s Basketball 72-61

HAVRE, Mont.- The Skylights ended the game on a 17-3 run in the final five minutes of play as the Battlin' Bears lost by nine on Saturday afternoon.

A slow start hurt Rocky in Havre, as the Skylights had everything fall their way in the first quarter. MSU-Northern finished the period on a 14-1 run, as a three-pointer that beat the buzzer by Taya Trottier gave the Skylights a 24-10 lead. Seven turnovers plagued any early momentum for the Rocky women.

Rocky was able to bounce back after hitting their first three shots of the second quarter to get out to a 7-0 run. Both teams went through an offensive cold streak, but the Battlin' Bears were the ones to regain some rhythm before the end of the half, as Iliana Moran dropped a layup in before the end of the half to cut the Rocky deficit to three.

Early three-pointers from Madeline Heggem and Gracee Lekvold brought the game back tied 37-37 in the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the quarter, as Morgan Baird got a jumper to fall to tie the game at 47-47 going into the fourth quarter.

Angie Cavanaugh was the engine for the Rocky offense in the fourth quarter, hitting three three-pointers in the first four minutes of the quarter, scoring 10 of her 12 total points in the fourth quarter. Northern's McKenzie Long matched Cavanaugh's run with eight points of her own as she tied the game at 58-58 with under five minutes remaining in the game. Long's three would be the score that would spark a 17-3 run for MSU-Northern to close the game as the Battlin' Bears dropped their second game this season to the Skylights.

Morgan Baird led the way for Rocky with 12 points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds. Baird also tallied two blocks and three assists. Angie Cavanaugh added 12 points, while Gracee Lekvold added 11 points and two steals.

Ryley Kehr was the game's leading scorer, finishing with 14 points for MSU-Northern.

The Rocky women (15-10, 4-9 conf.) will return home to host Carroll College and Montana Western to conclude the regular season.
