Rocky Women’s Basketball Drops Second Straight to Montana Western 66-60

BILLINGS, Mont.- A frustrating night shooting from deep ultimately hurts the Battlin' Bears as they fall 66-60 at home.

Both teams traded baskets back and forth throughout the first quarter, with a jumper by Morgan Baird giving Rocky a 16-13 edge after the first 10 minutes.

Madeline Heggem sank a three-pointer on the second possession of the quarter to give Rocky their largest lead at four. Back-and-forth scoring continued throughout the quarter, but five turnovers in the second quarter by the Rocky women helped the Bulldogs snag a halftime lead.

Neither side created much separation until the end of the third quarter when Montana Western finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to grab an eight-point lead. Rocky shot just 3-11 from three in the quarter, while the Bulldogs went 9-13 from the field in the third period.

A jumper by Maddy Moy gave Montana Western their largest lead of the game at 10 points with five minutes remaining. While the Battlin' Bears went a perfect 4-4 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line in the final five minutes of play, two turnovers inside the final minute ultimately proved costly, as the Battlin' Bears fell at home 66-60.

Gracee Lekvold led the way with 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists in the loss. Morgan Baird added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench and Iliana Moran added four points and six assists in her return to the starting lineup. The Battlin' Bears shot just 8-27 from three-point range in the loss while giving up 15 turnovers.

The Frontier Conference's leading scorer Jordan Sweeney led the way with 22 points, four rebounds, and four steals for Montana Western.

The Rocky women (14-8, 3-7 conf.) are back at home to kick off the third and final rotation in conference play, hosting the No. 13 ranked University of Providence.
