Sato’s National Championship Run Leads Battlin’ Bears to Slalom Team Title

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.- Hilde Iren Sato earned her second and third career national titles as the Battlin' Bears earned a team title in the slalom and a sweep in the combined alpine. 

Women's Slalom

The Rocky women cruised to their third team title of the week in the slalom. Hilde Iren Sato led the way to earn her second individual title of her career and the first in the slalom, finishing first overall with a combined time of 1:45.64. Synne Gaustad earned First Team All-American honors with a third-place finish, tallying a combined time 1:46.40. 

Bergitte Varne and Sofia Brustia added Second Team All-American honors, as Varne finished 9th at 1:48.97 and Brustia finished 10th at 1:49.60. 

The Battlin' Bears placed first in the team standings with a team time of 5:21.01, finishing nine seconds ahead of second place Babson College. 

The performance of the Battlin' Bears earned them an impressive sweep, earning the top-four places in the individual combined alpine results. Hilde Iren Sato was the individual champion with 4.98 race points. Synne Kvinlog followed in second with 33.95 points, Bergitte Varne placed third with 39.29 points, and Sofia Brustia finished fourth with 70.93 points. 

Men's SlopeStyle

In the men's slopestyle, Gusten Berglund was the top finisher for the Battlin' Bears, finishing 39th overall. Felix Besser finished 40th overall and Austin Johnson finished 46th overall to round out the competitors. The Rocky men finished 16th overall in the team standings. 

Women's SlopeStyle

Sara Akerstrom led the way for the Battlin' Bears in the women's slopestyle, finishing as a Second Team All-American after placing 8th overall. Emma Hiebert also advanced to the finals, placing 12th overall. Cora Moriarty missed the finals and finished 22nd overall to round out Rocky's competitors. 

The Rocky women finished fourth overall with 42 place points. The Claremont Colleges won the team award with 18 place points. 

Friday's action will include the men's slalom, with the men's and women's duel panel slalom concluding action on Saturday.
