PREVIEW: Rocky Volleyball Wraps Up Non-Conference Action in Texas

8/30/2024 11:03:00 AM

SAN ANTONIO, Texas.- Rocky Volleyball will play their final four matches of the non-conference schedule in San Antonio, Texas, at the ShinDig Tourney.

Last Time Out

The Battlin' Bears took on the Big Dogs Classic in Illinois last weekend. They swept their competition to go 4-0 on the weekend and improved their season record to 6-1.

Rocky earned four-set wins over host St. Francis and Saint Xavier on the first day. They won a hard-fought battle with Mount Mercy in five sets on Saturday and concluded the weekend with a dominant three-set sweep of Rochester Christian. They'll look to continue their momentum through the final weekend of non-conference action before preparing for the conference schedule that begins with a trip to Butte to take on No. 21-ranked Montana Tech.

Game Notes

Non-Conference Momentum
Rocky is off to a strong start to the 2024 season, winning six of its first seven matchups. This is the best start for the Battlin' Bears since the shortened 2020 spring season when they also won six of their first seven matchups.

Attacking Success
Outside hitter Makenna Bushman continues to show she's one of the best at her position in the Frontier Conference, ranking fifth in kills per set (2.84) and fourth in total kills (71) through the first seven matches of the season.

Defender of the Year
Libero Brooke Ark, the 2023 Frontier Conference Defender of the Year, has picked up her pace from a season ago, totaling 6.08 digs per set and 152 total digs this season. Both marks rank second in the Frontier Conference thus far. She surpassed 1,500 career digs this past weekend in Illinois.

Soaring Above the Net
Rocky ranks second in the Frontier Conference in total blocks with 58, led by sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Wood, who leads the Battlin' Bears with 23. Rocky has four players who have tallied ten or more blocks this season.

More Career Accolades
Senior Blythe Sealey needs just 58 assists over the weekend to surpass 3,500 assists in her career. The four-year starter from Roundup, Montana, has tallied at least 1,300 assists in each of the past two seasons.
