Rocky Volleyball Drops Back-and-Forth Home Opener in Four Sets to #15 Providence

BILLINGS, Mont.—The Battlin' Bears fell to the No. 15-ranked Argos in a competitive four-set match on Thursday evening.

How it Happened

Neither team put together much separation to begin, as a kill by Liddia Fontaine gave Rocky a slim 13-12 lead in the first set. The Argos would flash their strengths that have shot them up the NAIA Coaches Poll in the first set, rattling off six straight points to force a Rocky timeout. While the Battlin' Bears made some adjustments to pull the match close again, the Argos would pull away for a 25-19 first-set victory.

Rocky was able to ride the momentum of a great home crowd for the first time this season, streaking out to an early 14-9 lead in the second set. Liddia Fontaine would spike a kill that would spark a five-point run. While the Argos stopped the run, the Battlin' Bears were able to ride their lead to a commanding 25-16 second set victory.

The third set was a slugfest, showing flashes of an exciting conference semifinal match from 2023. Neither team separated themselves by more than three points for most of the set. It was the 15th-ranked Argos who took the momentum late, as Providence swiped a third-set victory, 25-21.

The fourth and final set came down to the wire, continuing the theme of a close match throughout. While Providence jumped out to a 12-7 lead following a kill from Nina Janjic, Kaitlyn Wood would ignite the home crowd with a solo block and later two kills that gave the Battlin' Bears a slim 22-21 lead. After Makenna Bushman powered in a kill to tie the match at 24-24, the Argos would swipe back-to-back points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

Makenna Bushman tallied her ninth game this season of double-digit kills, finishing one shy of her season high with 18 total, adding 14 digs and two service aces. Gabriella Panzetta spiked a season-high 12 kills along with four blocks, Brooke Ark finished with a season-high 35 digs and three service aces, and Blythe Sealey finished the match with 44 assists, three total blocks, and 12 digs. Madeline Gilder also added three service aces and 11 digs.

The Battlin' Bears were narrowly out hit by percentage, .139 to .126. Rocky totaled eight service aces on the night and ten blocks overall.
