Rocky Football Falls to Eastern Oregon 23-20

BILLINGS, Mont.- Three costly turnovers hurt the Battlin' Bears as they fell at home to the Mountaineers, 23-20.

How it Happened

Rocky struck first on the afternoon, cruising on an eight-play, 69-yard drive that was capped off by a 40-yard pitch and catch from Graedyn Buell to DeNiro Killian Jr. The ensuing extra point was blocked, as Rocky took a 6-0 lead.

Neither offense showed much momentum following that for the remainder of the half, as a combined four punts on the next four drives of the game eventually led to the Mountaineers making their way down the field thanks to a 40-yard completion by Malachi Spurrier from quarterback Quincy Glasper to get Eastern Oregon deep in Rocky territory. The Battlin' Bears stood tall in the red zone, forcing a field goal to retain their 6-3 lead.

Within the final minute of the half, Graedyn Buell got loose and scrambled for 32 yards, reaching for the pylon at the end of the play for what would be a touchdown on the field, but unfortunately, was overturned by video review as a fumble into the endzone that would keep the score at 6-3 going into halftime.

Eastern Oregon would waste no time to open up the half, receiving the ball in the second half at their 20-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Quincy Glasper found Colton Kesey open down the side of the field, scrambling for an 80-yard touchdown to open the half and give the Mountaineers a 10-6 lead.

The Rocky offense would put together arguably their best drive of the day two possessions later, as the Battlin' Bears marched for an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that featured a 25-yard rush by Ben Rooney, a 17-yard completion from Graedyn Buell to Jack Waddell, and eventually Buell keeping it himself for a two-yard rushing touchdown to swipe the lead back, 13-10.

Their lead would be shortlived, as three plays later, Quincy Glasper would scramble out of the pocket, make a handful of Battlin' Bears miss, and scamper on for a 65 yard rushing touchdown to take the lead back for Eastern Oregon, 17-13.

Glasper would do it again with his legs to open up the fourth quarter, rushing for a 14-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the quarter to give Eastern Oregon a 23-13 lead following the PAT attempt hitting the crossbar.

Despite a three-and-out from Rocky on their next drive, the defense would force a three-and-out from Eastern Oregon. The ensuing punt from the Mountaineers came off the side of Quin McLaren's foot, giving the Battlin' Bears the ball at Eastern Oregon's 30-yard line.

That one mistake was all the Battlin' Bears needed to scratch back to a three-point deficit, as Graedyn Buell found Jack Waddell for a 30-yard reception and touchdown on the first play of their drive to bring the score to 23-20.

The Rocky defense rose to the occasion, as they've done time and time again, to force a Mountaineer three-and-out to give the ball back to the Battlin' Bears. Graedyn Buell would lead the offense, primarily on his feet, down inside the Eastern Oregon five-yard line before a costly mistake turned into a Mountaineer interception in the endzone. Following a pair of Eastern Oregon first downs on offense, the Mountaineers would kneel the ball out to swipe a victory on Homecoming weekend.
