#19 Rocky Men’s Basketball Drops 79-74 Matchup Against Providence

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears could not overcome a sluggish first half, dropping a home matchup against Providence on Thursday evening.

The Battlin' Bears totaled just 19 points in the opening half, shooting 23.1% from the field with five turnovers. Despite shooting over 54% from the field with just one turnover in the second half, the deficit was too much to overcome, falling to the Argos in the Fortin Education Center.

How it Happened

Providence was the first to strike, jumping to an early 12-4 lead. Rocky found their rhythm in a hurry, however, as a 10-0 run followed for the Battlin' Bears, capitalized by a Jaylon Lee alley-oop slam in transition to give Rocky a 14-12 lead and forcing an Argo timeout with 12 minutes remaining in the half.

From then on, the Battlin' Bear offense fell into a rut, going scoreless for nine minutes of game time. Colton Spencer finally broke this by a three-pointer with three minutes to play. The offensive drought led to a 16-point Argo lead at halftime.

After the Argos extended their lead to as large as 20 to open up the second half, the Battlin' Bears chipped their way back into it, getting their way to the free throw and capitalizing on their opportunities to build a 13-3 run to shrink their deficit to single digits.

After Rocky reduced their deficit to single digits with 12 minutes to go, Providence made their living at the free-throw line. They combined to shoot 15-of-21 from the charity stripe, coupled with a 50% field goal percentage in the final 12 minutes. This effort helped hold off any comeback efforts for Rocky, handing the Battlin' Bears their fourth loss of the season.

Notable Statistics

Jaylon Lee led all Rocky scorers with 20 points, his fifth game of 20 or more points this season, adding nine rebounds and three blocks. Jesse Owens tallied 14 points, while Omari Nesbit and Colton Spencer each finished with 13 points a piece.

Rocky's six turnovers were a season low, which featured just one second-half turnover. Their 29 total rebounds were also a season low, being narrowly outrebounded 31-29.

Antoine Boyd Jr. tallied a game-high 28 points, while Jamil Bowles added 25 points and 15 rebounds.
