Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

#19 Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to #11 Montana Tech 76-59

BUTTE, Mont.- The No. 19-ranked Rocky men dropped their second straight conference matchup, this time to the No.11-ranked Orediggers in Butte.

Montana Tech evened the season series after the Battlin' Bears won the first game in Billings to open the conference schedule. The two top-25 teams will meet again on February 13th in the Fortin Education Center.

How it Happened

The Orediggers jumped out to a quick double-digit lead after the Battlin' Bears missed their first seven shots and turned the ball over twice in the first five minutes of the game, with the Orediggers leading 12-0.

Kade Erickson came off the bench to help jump-start the Battlin' Bear offense, scoring Rocky's first five points. The Battlin' Bears began to piece scoring drives together as Royce Robinson and Jesse Owens sank three-pointers to drive a 10-2 run that shrunk their deficit to five. With both teams trading baskets, the Battlin' Bears would hold the Orediggers to just two points in the final three minutes of the half to shrink the Oredigger lead to three going into the break.

Keely Bake totaled the first five points of the half to extend the Montana Tech lead to eight early in the second half. While Colton Spencer would help reduce the deficit down to four with a pair of mid-range jumpers, the Orediggers would rebuild their lead back to double digits and never give it up, as Rocky shot just 33.3% from the field in the second half to drop their second consecutive conference game and their first to Montana Tech this season.

Notable Statistics

Colton Spencer led the Rocky scorers with 13 points off the bench in the defeat. Carter McCoy tallied an 11-point, 13 rebounds double-double, his third of the season, while also swiping three steals. Jesse Owens was also in double figures with 10 points.

The Rocky men shot just 36.7% from the field overall and only 23.8% from three-point range.

Four Orediggers finished in double figures, led by 19 points from Keeley Bake. Hayden Diekhans and Michael Ure each added 14 points apiece.
