Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

No. 20 Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 23 Providence 79-71

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears dropped the second of three matchups to the No. 23-ranked Argos on Thursday evening at home.

Providence utilized a third-quarter run to extend a double-digit lead that the Battlin' Bears could not overcome. They now split the season series with a third matchup in Great Falls on February 8th.

How it Happened

The Rocky women leaned on the three ball early, hitting four of their first five attempts, including a pair from Paige Wasson, to jump out to an early 14-7 lead in the first quarter. After the Argos brought their deficit back down to one, it was Wasson's three-point shooting that rocketed the Battlin' Bear lead back up to eight at the end of the quarter, hitting her third and fourth three-pointer of the quarter to spark a 7-0 run as Rocky led 28-16 at the end of the first.

Providence evened things to open the second quarter, rattling off a 12-4 run to tie the game with five minutes to go in the first half. Rocky's offense struggled in the second quarter, shooting three-of-11 overall while turning the ball over four times. Neither team could muster much offensively to close the half, as an and-one from Ashlee Maldanado was the lone basket in the final two minutes to give Providence a four-point halftime advantage.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the start of the third quarter, with Sydney Dethman getting a layup to fall to give the Battlin' Bears a 49-48 lead with four minutes remaining in the quarter. For the final four minutes of the quarter, however, it was all Argos, as Providence combined to shoot five-of-five from the field and three-of-three from the free throw line en route to a 14-1 run to close the third quarter with a twelve-point lead.

With five minutes remaining in the game, the Argos extended their lead to as large as 17 points. Paige Wasson ignited a 9-0 run over 30 seconds of play thanks to a trio of Argo turnovers, bringing the game back within eight points with four minutes to play. Unfortunately, the Argos were able to withstand the Battlin' Bear momentum and escape the Fortin Education Center with an eight-point victory.
