No. 20 Rocky Women’s Basketball Grabs Road Victory at (RV) Montana Tech 62-53

BUTTE, Mont.- All five starters finished in double-figures as the No. 20-ranked Battlin' Bears secured their second victory of the season over the Orediggers on Saturday afternoon.

The Rocky women utilized a 19-8 run in the third quarter to regain a lead and held their lead through the final whistle.

The win puts the Battlin' Bears back into a tie for first place in the Frontier Conference standings with a 5-2 conference record after No. 22 Carroll College fell to No. 23 Providence on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

With both teams trading baskets for the first six minutes of action, Paige Wasson and Sydney Dethman combined for a 9-2 run for the final 3:30 of the first quarter to give the Battlin' Bears a 17-9 lead after the first quarter. Rocky's defense held the Orediggers to four of thirteen shooting from the field to begin.

Turnovers hurt the Rocky offense in the second quarter. Four turnovers in the final five minutes of the half lent Montana Tech a 12-3 run, which reduced their deficit to three points at halftime.

The Orediggers got a hot start to the second half, scoring the first six points to grab a three-point lead. The momentum then swung Rocky's way, as Iliana Moran and Isabelle Heggem combined to shoot five-of-five and thus a 14-3 run midway through the third quarter, capitalized by an and-one layup by Heggem gave the Battlin' Bears an eight-point lead with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Hallie Neubauer scored eight straight points for Montana Tech in the final four minutes of the quarter, but a three-pointer by Paige Wasson at the end of the quarter gave the Battlin' Bears another eight-point lead going into the final period.

Montana Tech brought the game back into contention with a 9-2 run through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Rocky would again swing the momentum in their favor, as a 9-0 run in response would extend the largest lead of the game of 12 points with only a minute remaining all but secured Rocky's fifth conference victory.
