(RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Smothers Orediggers in 56-35 Conference Opener Victory

BILLINGS, Mont.- The (RV) Battlin' Bears locked down (RV) Montana Tech throughout as they secured a victory in the 2024-25 conference opener.

Rocky's defense was excellent, holding the Orediggers to just 20.4% shooting from the field and 18.8% from three in the victory. A controlling fourth quarter allowed the Battlin' Bears to cruise to their first win in the Fortin Education Center this season and a 1-0 conference record.

How it Happened

Neither team found much momentum offensively to open up the contest; a pair of free throws from Tech's Liv Wangerin tied the game at 7-7 after the first five minutes of play. The Battlin' Bears would close the quarter on an 8-0 run that would help grab Rocky's first sustained lead of the contest, hitting four of their final five shots of the quarter to lead 15-7 following the first ten minutes.

The Battlin' Bears extended their lead to open the quarter, hitting back-to-back shots to extend their lead to double-digits. After Brooklynn Hankwitz hit a three-pointer ahead of the seven-minute mark, both teams went on a three-and-a-half-minute dry spell until Paige Wasson eventually broke the streak with a jumper following an offensive rebound. Montana Tech closed their gap going into halftime, hitting their final three shots of the period to cut the deficit to five points at the half.

With both teams trading baskets throughout the third quarter, it was another late 8-0 Rocky run extended a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter, capitalized by an and-one layup by Sydney Dethman to put the Battlin' Bears up by 11 going into the fourth quarter.

The Battlin' Bear defense was smothering in the final quarter, outscoring the Orediggers 15-5 to secure a dominant victory at home and begin the conference schedule 1-0.
