(RV) Rocky Men’s Basketball Shock Argos Behind Hot-Shooting Second Half

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- After missing their first 14 three-pointers and trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Rocky men erupted offensively to secure a comeback victory in Great Falls on Thursday evening.

The victory stamped Rocky's seventh straight victory and their second straight conference win. After a slow start, the Battlin' Bears shot 56% from the field in the final 16 minutes to secure another statement win.

Rocky has not lost to an NAIA program since their second game of the season on November 2nd to Arizona Christian.

How it Happened

Both teams traded baskets throughout the first five minutes of the game, with the Argos grabbing an early edge after Nikolajs Atanasovs hit a jumper to go up 12-9.

Led by Antoine Boyd Jr., Providence ended the first half firing on both ends, compiling a 15-4 run over the final four minutes of play to secure a 16-point halftime lead.

A pair of free throws from Ryan Chavez opened the scoring in the second half to give the Argos their largest lead of the game at 18 points. For the next five minutes of play, however, the Battlin' Bears were red hot from the field, putting together an eye-popping 20-0 run that featured eight-of-ten shooting from the field and four-of-six from three-point range while forcing four Providence turnovers to flip an 18-point deficit to a two-point advantage with 14 minutes remaining in the game.

The Argos stopped the bleeding with a 6-0 run in response to snag a lead back with 12 minutes remaining. After both teams traded baskets, the Rocky men scored on three straight possessions for a 7-0 run that gave them a one-point lead going into the final five minutes of play.

A scoring drought gave Providence another lead nearing the final three minutes of play, but Jaylon Lee swung the momentum back into Rocky's favor with a steal and a fastbreak slam that sparked an 8-0 run going into the final minute of play with a five-point Battlin' Bear lead.

While the Argos cut it to a one-possession game twice in the final minute, Jesse Owens and Jaylon Lee combined to go four-of-four from the free throw line to seal a victory in Great Falls for the Battlin' Bears.
