Rocky Volleyball Goes the Distance With Montana Western; Falling in Five Sets

DILLON, Mont. - Rocky Volleyball dropped a hard-fought five-set matchup with the Bulldogs on the road on Saturday night.

How It Happened

Kaitlyn Wood led the charge in the first set with six kills in a back-and-forth set. After a Bulldog service ace forced a Battlin' Bear timeout with a two-point deficit, a kill from Olivia Fauth sparked a three-point run to put Rocky up 24-23. From there, neither team could secure the set point until a kill from Sadie Meier and a Montana Western attack error eventually secured a 31-29 first set win.

With the second set remaining close again, Kaitlyn Wood and Rachel Whyte combined for a block to give Rocky a 17-13 lead and force a Montana Western timeout. While the Bulldogs clawed back within one point, Gabriella Panzetta put up the set-sealing block to lead Rocky to a 25-23 second-set win.

Montana Western controlled the third set to keep the match alive, utilizing three service aces and 15 kills to take a set back 25-19.

The fourth set was another entertaining one, as while the Bulldogs took an 18-14 lead —the largest by either team in the set —Rocky would total a 7-2 to tie it at 20-20. Again, similar to the first set, both teams traded points back and forth, though this time Montana Western secured back-to-back kills to force the match into a fifth set after a 29-27 fourth-set win.

Montana Western would seize the momentum they found by posting the best hitting percentage by either team in the match during the fifth set (.240) to escape with a five-set victory following a 15-9 fifth set win.

Kaitlyn Wood totaled a team high 13 kills (.258), along with eight blocks. Stepping into a starting role, Kristyn Mentink added a career high 39 assists, 14 digs, two service aces, and three blocks. Zoey Albert totaled 22 digs, while Dylan Pospisil and Lauren Rodacker also finished with double-figure digs.
