Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls in 76-74 Slugfest to Carroll College

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bear men dropped their conference opener to Carroll College 76-74 at home on Friday evening.

After Rocky tied the game with five minutes remaining, Carroll College relied on strong free-throw shooting to close out the game, defeating the Battlin' Bears by two.

How It Happened

Rocky took the first lead of the contest, as Sherman Royal III and Omari Nesbit tallied the first baskets of the game to give the Battlin' Bears an early 4-0 lead. Carroll College would respond swiftly with a 12-0 run, forcing a Battlin' Bear timeout.

With both teams trading baskets, Rocky's offense would be burdened by turnovers midway through the first half, giving way to a 9-2 Carroll run to force another Rocky timeout with five minutes to play in the first half. Royce Robinson would help propel the Battlin' Bear offense to close out the first half, scoring eight points in the final five minutes of the half to cut the Battlin' Bear deficit to six at halftime.

Rocky's defense would be key to open the second half, forcing five Saints' turnovers over the first five minutes to trim their deficit to one point following a three-pointer from Kade Erickson. The Battlin' Bears would regain the lead with a 12-3 run, hitting five consecutive shots from the field and capped off with a Sherman Royal III three-pointer and a charge drawn on the ensuing possession with 9:40 left in the game.

Carroll College would regain the lead and the momentum with less than five minutes remaining, following an 11-3 run in which the Battlin' Bears turned the ball over five times. Leading down the final stretch, Sherman Royal III would be fouled on a rebound attempt with ten seconds remaining, making both of his free throws to cut Rocky's deficit to two. Carroll College would be fouled immediately following the inbound, where they would convert one of their two attempts. With eight seconds to go, Omari Nesbit would be fouled down by three points. After making his first attempt, Nesbit would intentionally miss the second, hoping to give the Battlin' Bears a chance at the offensive rebound, but unfortunately for Rocky, the ball would bound out of both teams' hands and out of bounds with possession to Carroll College, ultimately concluding the contest with a two-point defeat.

Notable Statistics

Omari Nesbit finished with a game-high 24 points, sinking five threes and adding five assists. Sherman Royal III totaled 15 points and seven rebounds, while Royce Robinson tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.

Rocky grabbed 12 offensive rebounds total, turning those into 17 second-chance points. Rocky also outrebounded Carroll College overall 29-18. A total of 20 Battlin' Bear turnovers resulted in 24 points off turnovers for the Fighting Saints.

Isaiah Crane, last year's leading scorer for the Frontier Conference, led Carroll with 18 points overall, one of five Saints in double-figures.
