#17 Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls in 93-88 Shootout Against Bismarck State

BISMARCK, N.D.- Rocky Women's Basketball suffered its first loss of the season in a high-scoring affair in Bismarck. 

The Mystics exploded from downtown, sinking 23 three-pointers to secure the upset victory. 

How It Happened

The Battlin' Bears got off to a blazing start against the Mystics, hitting four straight shots and three consecutive three-pointers early in the first quarter to jump out to an 11-2 lead after two minutes of play. Later in the quarter, a trio of three-pointers from Bismarck State would lead to a 9-0 run and tie the game at 16-16. A 7-3 run in response by the Battlin' Bears would lead to a four-point lead at the end of the quarter. 

The Mystics would erupt from three-point range in the second quarter, sinking eight threes in the second quarter alone and pushing their first-half total to 13 threes made at a 48.1% clip. While the Battlin' Bears had a strong offensive quarter of their own, making 10-of-14 shots from the field (71.4%), Bismarck State's 31-second-quarter points would lead to a four-point lead at the half. 

Paige Wasson led the scoring charge for Rocky out of the gates in the third quarter, scoring eight points in the period, to help pave the way for the Battlin' Bears to snag a 65-61 lead with 2:20 remaining in the quarter. The Mystics would score five unanswered points to close out the quarter, taking a narrow one-point lead into the fourth quarter. 

Bismarck State would ultimately separate itself in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, hitting seven straight shots from the field, including six consecutive three-pointers to build a double-digit lead. While Rocky held the Mystics without a field goal for the final five minutes of the contest, Bismarck State converted on late free throws to hand Rocky their first loss of the season. 

Notable Statistics

Paige Wasson led all scorers with an efficient 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from three-point range. She's the first Battlin' Bear with a 30+ point performance since 2023. 

Isabelle Heggem neared a triple-double, totaling 17 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and two blocks. Brenna Linse was also in double figures with 14 points. 

Overall, the Battlin' Bears had a strong offensive night, shooting 51.6% from the field and 61.9% from three-point range. 

The difference in the contest was the three-point shooting from Bismarck State College, launching 51 three-pointers and connecting on 23 of them (45.1%). Five different Mystics finished in double-figures, with eight players recording two or more made three-pointers.
