#15 Rocky Women’s Basketball Handles #21 Oregon Tech 74-53

HELENA, Mont.- Rocky Women's Basketball moves to 2-0 in ranked matchups this season, defeating No. 21-ranked Oregon Tech 74-53.

The Battlin' Bear defense stood out in their winning effort, holding the Owls to just 23.5% shooting from three-point range, while sophomore Isabelle Heggem tallied four blocks on the evening.

How It Happened

Neither team saw much separation early on, with Oregon Tech taking a three-point advantage with under three minutes to go, as Tatum Schmerbach scored her eighth point of the quarter. An and-one from Isabelle Heggem later in the quarter would spark an 11-0 run for the Battlin' Bears to close out the first quarter and give Rocky a lead they would never relinquish.

Five straight points from Iliana Moran to open the second quarter helped extend Rocky's lead to double digits. After the Owls would cut back their deficit, the Battlin' Bear defense helped close the half strong, holding Oregon Tech without a made field goal for the final four minutes of play, leading to a 9-2 run to end the half, capped off by a buzzer-beating putback by Isabelle Heggem to give her team a 34-23 halftime advantage.

The Battlin' Bears withheld their lead for the first six minutes of the third quarter, but the Owls would piece together a 9-2 run to bring the Rocky lead to five. The Battlin' Bears closed the quarter strong, as Angelina Cavanaugh drilled a three-pointer and Isabelle Heggem beat the buzzer again to extend Rocky's lead back to double digits entering the fourth quarter.

While neither team had a strong offensive start to the fourth quarter, the Battlin' Bears would break away midway through the quarter, following the under-five-minute media timeout. Isabelle Heggem would score eight straight points, and Rocky would hold the Owls without a point in the final 2:57 to extend a 21-point lead and secure the victory over 21st-ranked Oregon Tech.
