Rocky Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Walla Walla 91-53 in Season Opener

BILLINGS, Mont.- A combination of new faces and returners contributed to a team effort in a 38-point season-opening win for the Battlin' Bears on Sunday.

The win marks the first on the sidelines for Rocky Men's Basketball Head Coach Danny Neville, as his team never trailed in the contest, thanks to four players scoring in double figures and a defensive effort that held Walla Walla to just 20 first-half points.

How It Happened

Rocky left little doubt, even from the opening tip, as through the first three and a half minutes of play, the Battlin' Bears began their season on a 16-1 run, hitting seven of their first eight shots from the field and forcing three Walla Walla turnovers, which led to easy transition points and forced an early Wolves' timeout.

Cameron Quinnell would beat the halftime buzzer with a layup to extend Rocky's largest lead of the afternoon to that point at 30 points, holding a 50-20 lead going into the locker room. In their all-around excellent first half, the Battlin' Bears shot over 50% from the field, led by 13 first-half points from Kyle Jones, while forcing 14 Walla Walla turnovers, resulting in 23 points off turnovers.

The Battlin' Bears held their lead through the final whistle, growing a lead as large as 44 points in their runaway victory over Walla Walla.

Notable Statistics

Kyle Jones led the way in his Battlin' Bear debut with a game-high 16 points. Omari Nesbit added 15 points, along with four rebounds and three steals. Drew Bowman and Mekhi Jourdan each contributed 10 points apiece. Carter McCoy snagged a game-high nine rebounds, while Kade Erickson grabbed eight of his own and had three steals.

As a team, the Battlin' Bears shot 49.3% from the field and 34.4% from three-point range, hitting 11 threes on the afternoon. Sixteen offensive rebounds and 23 forced turnovers resulted in many extra possessions for Rocky, as they attempted 26 more field goal attempts in the win.
