Linse’s Career Day Not Enough as Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls to Benedictine-Mesa 68-64

MESA, Ariz.- Senior Brenna Linse scored 20 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, but the Battlin' Bears would go cold in the final five minutes to fall to Benedictine University at Mesa on Wednesday afternoon. 

How It Happened

Turnovers would hinder the Battlin' Bears early, as five turnovers in the first seven minutes of play would lead way for a 14-7 Benedictine-Mesa lead. The Battlin' Bears would clean up their start with an 8-1 closing run in the first quarter to tie the game at 15-15. 

Points were few and far between to open the second quarter, with both teams scoring just two points over the first five minutes of the period. With the Red Hawks scoring seven consecutive points, Rocky would close with five straights points to cut their deficit to two at half. 

The Battlin' Bears would take the first swing of the second half with a 7-0 run out of the gates, sparking an impressive offensive quarter. In the third quarter, Rocky would convert ten of their thirteen shots from the floor, as well as six of seven from the free throw line, to combine for 28 third-quarter points, 12 of which came from Brenna Linse

The fourth quarter was back and forth, as a pair of layups by Brenna Linse helped keep a one-point lead for the Battlin' Bears with under five minutes remaining. The Rocky offense would ultimately go cold to close out the contest, shooting just 2-for-9 from the field and falling by 4 points on the road in Mesa. 

Notable Statistics

Brenna Linse recorded the best statistical game of her collegiate career, totaling a career-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, along with nine rebounds and three blocks. Isabelle Heggem recorded her seventh double-double of the season, ending with 11 points and 14 rebounds, as well as six assists and four blocks. Paige Wasson also ended in double figures with 14 points. 

The Battlin' Bears shot 46.3% from the field, but just 13.0% from three-point range. The Battlin' Bears outrebounded the Red Hawks 33-24, including 11 offensive rebounds. 

Olivia Arvallo led Benedictine-Mesa with 22 points, three assists, and three steals.
