(RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Drops Overtime Slugfest Against #20 Carroll College 70-65

BILLINGS, Mont.- The matchup for first place in the Frontier Conference did not disappoint, as a back-and-forth matchup went in favor of the Fighting Saints in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Carroll's Meagan Karstetter sent the game to overtime with a buzzer-beating floater in regulation, and the Fighting Saints shot five-of-six from the field in the overtime period to swipe away a win and hand the Battlin' Bears just their third conference defeat.

Both teams relied heavily on their starters throughout a game with heavy implications for the Frontier Conference standings. Bench players combined for just 13 minutes and zero points.

How it Happened

Rocky's defense was as good as it could be to open the contest, holding the Saints to just six first-quarter points on three-of-14 shooting from the field as Iliana Moran got a jumper to fall to give the Battlin' Bears a 15-6 lead after one quarter.

The defense continued its excellent effort in the second quarter, holding Carroll scoreless for nearly five minutes to open a 13-point advantage. The Saints finally began to find their rhythm to close out the second quarter, cutting their deficit to ten at the halftime break.

The second half began a heavy-weight bout through the final whistle, as neither team could create much separation. Gracee Lekvold sank a three-pointer to give Rocky an 11-point lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Carroll would bounce back to cut their deficit back down to seven following a jumper by Meagan Karstetter with 1:34 to go. Gracee Lekvold would get the final shot in the quarter and battled through the lane for a layup to extend Rocky's lead back out to eight entering the fourth quarter.

Both teams traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter, as Isabelle Heggem hit a quick-trigger three-pointer to give Rocky a ten-point lead with seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Battlin' Bear offense went cold over the final six minutes of the quarter, and Carroll took advantage, with a three-pointer by Willa Albrecht cutting the Saints' deficit back down to two with 30 seconds remaining. After a Battlin' Bear turnover on the inbound, Meagan Karstetter kept the game alive, salvaging a possession where Rocky played excellent defense and floating a shot before the buzzer that went in and forced the game to an overtime period.

Carroll's offense finally found its rhythm, grabbing their first lead since the opening minute with a Kyndall Keller jumper on their opening possession of overtime. From then on, the Fighting Saints would snag the win in overtime, shooting five-of-six from the field and four-of-six from the free throw line to secure a five-point win over Rocky.
