(RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Smothers Orediggers in 57-36 Victory

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears earned a season sweep over Montana Tech after holding the Orediggers to just 23.5% shooting from the field to claim sole possession of second place in the Frontier Conference standings.

How it Happened

The freshmen tandem of Isabelle Heggem and Paige Wasson combined to score 13 of Rocky's first 15 points of the evening, helping the Battlin' Bears jump out to an early 17-8 advantage in the first quarter.

Turnovers halted the Battlin' Bear's momentum going into the second quarter, turning the ball over seven times in the quarter, resulting in just three points over the ten-minute quarter, including no points in the final four minutes of the half. Rocky's momentum on the defensive end kept Rocky's lead afloat, holding the Orediggers to just two-of-13 shooting from the field to hold a five-point lead going into halftime.

After the Orediggers got the first basket of the half on a layup by Hadley Humphreys, the Battlin' Bears rattled off a 12-2 run, hitting four consecutive shots from the field to open up a 15-point advantage. Overall, in the third quarter, the Battlin' Bears hit four threes and shot over 50% from the field to extend a lead as large as 21. Rocky's 26-point third quarter was led by eight points from both Gracee Lekvold and Iliana Moran

Rocky kept their foot on the pedal in the fourth quarter, opening the quarter on a 7-1 run through the first five minutes, jumping out to a 27-point lead, enough for the Battlin' Bears to earn the season sweep over the Orediggers and reclaim sole possession of second place in the Frontier Conference standings.

Four Battlin' Bears finished in double-figures, led by Gracee Lekvold who scored 13 points and added four assists and two steals. Sydney Dethman and Iliana Moran added 12 points a piece, and Isabelle Heggem finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.

Thursday's game was the third time the Battlin' Bears held their opponents to 40 points or less this season and the second time they've done so against Montana Tech. It was also the sixth game in which they've held their opponents to under 30% shooting from the field.

Montana Tech's one-made three-pointer was a season-low allowed by the Battlin' Bears, as the Orediggers finished just one-of-13 from deep.
