Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls In Frontier Conference Championship Game

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- A stagnant offensive output saw the Battlin' Bears fall in the Frontier Conference Championship game.

The Battlin' Bears finished as the Frontier Conference Tournament Runner-Ups and won their first outright Frontier Conference Regular Season Championship since 1987-88.

How it Happened

Both teams were clicking to start, as each team shot over 50% entering the first media timeout, with the Argos holding a narrow one-point lead. The Argos would hit four of their last six shots of the quarter, including a half-court heave from Ainsley Thurber to extend a lead of ten after the first quarter. The Battlin' Bears would cool off from the field in the final five minutes of the quarter, being held scoreless for the final 4:26 of game time.

The scoring lull continued for Rocky into the second quarter, as Brenna Linse's four points were the only points scored by the Battlin' Bears in the first eight minutes of the quarter. Gracee Lekvold dropped in a pair of baskets in the final minute of play, but Rocky still faced a sizeable deficit going into halftime.

Providence did not let off the gas pedal, opening the half on an 8-2 run to force an early Battlin' Bear timeout. Rocky's offense would begin to find their rhythm, outscoring the Argos for the remainder of the quarter, but still ultimately facing a 20-point climb going into the fourth quarter.

While Rocky had their best offensive period in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late, as the Battlin' Bears fell in the championship game.

Notable Statistics

Iliana Moran tied for a game-high of 15 points, adding five assists and two steals. Gracee Lekvold and Paige Wasson each added nine points, while Wasson snagged ten rebounds.

The conference's best free throw shooting team during conference play had a stretch of seven straight missed free throws that uncharacteristically hurt the Battlin' Bears in the first half, as they finished shooting just 55.6% from the charity stripe.

Four Argo starters finished in double figures, led by a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double from Keanna Salave'a.
