Rocky Volleyball Drops Two in Sioux City to Open Their Season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - Rocky Volleyball fell in four sets in both of their matchups at the Siouxland Tournament in Iowa on Friday.

Rocky Mountain College: 1 - #13 Oklahoma Wesleyan: 3
(13-25, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25)

The Battlin' Bears had no easy contest to begin their season, as they matched up against the No. 13-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles to start their season. Rocky had to shake off some opening-season jitters in game one, as 18 attack errors and 10 service errors hindered their opportunities early in the match.

After a tough start for the Battlin' Bears in set one that saw six attack errors, Rocky found some rhythm in the second set, as a kill from freshman Feline Mulder and a block from Gabriella Panzetta gave the Battlin' Bears a 10-9 lead. After five straight points from Oklahoma Wesleyan eventually paved a 17-12 Eagles advantage, Rocky came out firing out of a timeout, as a pair of kills from newcomer Sadie Meier sparked a five-point rally to tie the match back up at 17-17. A pair of late service aces from the Eagles ultimately led them to a second-set win over the Battlin' Bears, 25-18.

After an early deficit, the Battlin' Bears were able to capitalize on their opposition's mistakes, as four consecutive attack errors, including blocks from Kaitlyn Wood and Gabriella Panzetta, helped spark a 9-1 run for Rocky to snag an 11-8 lead in the third set. Serves played a key role for the Battlin' Bears in the third set, totaling five service aces and no errors, led by two from Meredith Marsh, and one from each of Kirra Ban, Lindsay Lawrence, and Ella Kincaid. A mid-set run of 7-1 helped the Battlin' Bears build a 19-11 run, eventually leading to a kill from Kaitlyn Wood to secure a 25-21 third-set victory.

The Eagles were able to close things out in the fourth set, however, bouncing back from a .136 hitting percentage in the third set to hit .220 to total 15 kills in the final set and secure the victory in four sets.
Josie West and Kaitlyn Wood each tallied seven kills apiece to lead Rocky. Gabriella Panzetta totaled six blocks, Meredith Marsh led the way with 20 assists, and Zoey Albert finished the match with 16 digs. Ella Kincaid had an impactful game across the board, totaling 16 assists, six kills, and four service aces.

The Battlin' Bears were outhit percentage-wise, totaling just a .136 as a team compared to Oklahoma Wesleyan's .257. 2024 First Team NAIA All-American Evelyn Rohrberg led the match with 15 kills, while also adding six total blocks. 2024 Third Team NAIA All-American Sydney Collins racked up 45 assists.
Rocky Mountain College: 1 - (RV) Morningside University: 3
(25-23, 15-25, 18-25, 18-25)

Rocky Volleyball had a strong start to their nightcap, totaling a .226 hitting percentage as a team, as six different Battlin' Bears tallied kills in the opening set. Their defense at the net was a strong suit to start, forcing nine attack errors by Morningside. While things were tied at 21 all, Rocky finished strong and capitalized on Mustang mistakes to grab a 25-23 first set win.

It was all Morningside from there on, however, as Rocky was unable to total more than 10 kills in a set for the remainder of the match and totaled 15 attack errors over the final three sets. While the Battlin' Bear defense held Morningside to just a .145 hitting percentage overall in the match, forced 27 attack errors, and totaled 12 blocks overall, their offense was unable to keep up, falling in four sets in the second contest of the day at the Siouxland Tournament.

Josie West led the Battlin' Bears with seven kills. Freshman Feline Mulder had a standout performance, totaling six kills, eight blocks, and a service ace. Meredith Marsh added 15 assists and three service aces, while Zoey Albert, Kirra Ban, and Delayne Lindeen each had 10 digs apiece.

Jacey Miller led all players in the match with 16 kills for Morningside, while Audrey Waido totaled 37 assists.
