Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#23 Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls to #7 Dakota State 69-62

MADISON, S.D- Despite trimming a double-digit deficit down to just one point in the fourth quarter, Rocky Women's Basketball came up short against No. 7-ranked Dakota State.

The Battlin' Bears split the season series with the first-place Trojans, as they fall to 15-8 overall and 12-5 in conference play.

How It Happened

Neither team had a clean start offensively, as the two teams combined for ten first-quarter turnovers. The Trojans took a narrow four-point lead into the second quarter, with both teams shooting under 37% from the field through the opening ten minutes.

Dakota State would jumpstart its offense, sinking five consecutive three-pointers over the first five minutes of the second quarter to extend a 15-point advantage. Isabelle Heggem would help reignite Rocky's momentum to close the half, scoring eight points in the final four minutes of the half, as Rocky trailed by 11 at halftime.

Neither team had much for offensive firepower to open the half, but Paige Wasson would help trim Rocky's deficit, leading a 10-3 deficit that slimmed Rocky's gap to seven points at the end of the third quarter.

The Battlin' Bear defense gave them an opportunity in the fourth quarter, holding the Trojans without a field goal for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, as Angelina Cavanaugh sank a three-pointer to cap off an 8-2 run, cutting Rocky's deficit down to one point. Dakota State had the response they needed with a quick 7-0 run, never letting the Battlin' Bears back within five points and splitting the season series.
