Clutch Play Down the Stretch Leads #23 Rocky Men’s Basketball to a 73-69 Victory over (RV) Bellevue

BELLEVUE, Neb.- #23 Rocky Men's Basketball continued their unbeaten streak on the road, extending their win streak to 11 following a dramatic 73-69 victory over (RV) Bellevue University.

The Battlin' Bears played strong when they needed it most, as over the final 2:30 of the contest, Rocky converted on all three of their shots from the field and held Bellevue to just a pair of made free throws and no made shots from the field to hand the Bruins their first loss of the season on their home floor.

The victory gives Rocky more cushion in the Frontier Conference standings, holding a two-game lead with four games remaining in the regular season, as the Battlin' Bears seek their first regular season title since the 2013-14 season.

How It Happened

The Battlin' Bear offense was clicking to open the contest, converting their first six shots from the field to take an early 14-9 lead. A cold streak would commence over the next six minutes of play, leaving Bellevue a path for a 9-4 run to tie the contest at 18-18 with ten minutes to play in the half. Back-and-forth play would commence, as Jacob Bilodeau would spark a 9-2 run to give the Battlin' Bears a nine-point advantage with five minutes to play, before Bellevue would respond with a 9-0 run to close the half and tie the contest at 29-29.

Royce Robinson would score nine points over the first seven minutes of the second half, giving Rocky an eight-point advantage, the largest lead by either side in the final 20 minutes. The Bruins would quickly erase their deficit with a 10-2 run, tying the game at 47-47 with just under ten minutes left in the game. A tight contest that featured six ties and eight lead changes would eventually come down to the final two minutes of play. A steal by Royce Robinson would set up a jumper by Omari Nesbit, giving Rocky a one-point lead. A pair of free throws would give Bellevue the lead back, but again Nesbit would convert on a floater to give Rocky the lead right back with 50 seconds to play. From there on, the Battlin' Bear defense would wall up, keeping the Bruins scoreless over the final minute, as Omari Nesbit and Kyle Jones would drain the necessary free throws to give Rocky a four-point victory on the road.

Notable Statistics

Royce Robinson led all scorers with 20 points, adding four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Carter McCoy and Omari Nesbit each added an efficient 15 points, as McCoy sank six-of-eight from the field, while Nesbit finished six-of-nine. In his second start of the season, Jacob Bilodeau finished with 14 points and three rebounds.

The Rocky men shot 46.7% from the field and just 27.8% from three-point range. Rocky outrebounded the Bruins 33-30, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds. The Battlin' Bears took care of the basketball, winning the turnover margin six-to-12, including just two turnovers in the second half.
