Rocky Men’s and Women’s Golf Hold Double-Digit Stroke Leads After Day One at Papago Golf Club

PHOENIX, Ariz.- The Battlin' Bear men hold four of the top five individual scores after two rounds, while the Rocky women turned in an all-around team effort to lead both programs to double-digit stroke leads after two rounds of the Frontier Conference Championships. 

Men's Day One Results

Kristjan Burkelca fired a jaw-dropping round two, shooting seven-under-par 65 to take a three-stroke lead over the rest of the field. The defending conference champion finished the day shooting three-under-par 141 (76, 65), ending his day with an eagle and totaling nine birdies, the most of the field. 

Nathan Piers followed in second place after the first two rounds, shooting even-par 144 (70, 74). Piers totaled 24 pars in a consistent showing on Tuesday, the most of the field. Freshman Sam Norman led the field after round one, shooting three-under par 69, and finished one-over-par 145 (69, 76). Norman totaled all pars on the front nine in his first round and five birdies on the back nine, ending the day in third place overall. 

Aidan McDonagh rounded out the Rocky scorers in fifth place overall, shooting three-over-par 147 (72, 75). McDonagh also fired an eagle in his second round, one of just five golfers to do so on day one. Adam Hyde-Lay finished day one in 22nd place with a score of 15-over-par 159 (77, 82). 

An all-around strong showing from the Rocky men saw them lead all teams in par 4 scoring (+12), par 5s (-7), eagles (3), birdies (28), pars (107), least amount of bogeys (34), and least amount of doubles+ (8). The Battlin' Bears totaled a team score of one-over-par 577 (287, 290), ending the day with a 23-stroke lead over Bellevue University.

Women's Day One Results
The Battlin' Bear women saw three golfers finish inside the top ten individually, led by senior and defending conference champion Grace Metcalf, who is tied for second overall with a score of 17-over-par 161 (80, 81), thanks to a tournament-high 25 pars through two rounds and a combined score of one-over-par on par 5s, tied for the second-best of the field. Metcalf sits in a three-way tie for second place and trails the individual leader, Brooklyn Materi from Dickinson State. 

Alivia Webinger tied for fifth overall with a total score of 19-over-par 163 (81, 82). Webinger recorded the top scoring average on par 5s, shooting even-par on the day. Tyla Potgieter also finished the day inside the top ten, shooting 21-over-par 165 (82, 83). 

Kirsten Smith followed tied for 12th overall with a score of 27-over-par 171 (83, 88), recording the third-best scoring on par 3s, while Catalina Garcia rounded out the Battlin' Bear competitors, shooting 30-over-par 174 (85, 89). 

Overall, through the first two rounds, the Battlin' Bear women lead the field in par 5 scoring (+15), birdies (7), and pars (85). Rocky finished the first day with a team score of 84-over-par 660 (326, 334), holding a 14-stroke lead over Bellevue University.
