Battlin' Bears upset No. 2 ranked Raiders

Box Score Billings, Mont. –  No. 21 ranked Rocky Mountain College (4-2, 3-2 FC) pulled off an upset as they took down undefeated, No. 2 ranked Southern Oregon (4-1, 4-1 FC) 34-21.

The Raiders won the Frontier Conference Championship last year and were looking like potential favorites this year. Southern Oregon was undefeated with four straight conference wins.

The Battlin' Bears had only won once in series history against Southern Oregon. The Raiders stood 7-1 against the Battlin' Bears with Rocky losing only by a single point in the last two seasons.

The first score of the game was a Bakken to Gray touchdown pass at the beginning of the second quarter. Gray would haul in a 34 yard pass to put the Battlin' Bears up 7-0.

Southern Oregon's Rey Vega rushed in for a touchdown at the one yard line a few minutes later, putting the Raiders on the board and tying the score at 7-7.

Bakken took a four yard rush into the end zone shortly after that, but Vega cut the lead back to a tie with a four yard rushing touchdown of his own.

Dillon Johnson put the Battlin' Bears up by three, 17-14, as time expired in the first half.

The Battlin' Bears pulled ahead in the third quarter. Johnson nabbed his second field goal, putting the score at 20-14 Rocky. Bakken found Darneail Jenkins and Lucas Overton for a pair of touchdowns that put the Battlin' Bears up 34-14.

Southern Oregon's Wyatt Hutchinson would find Vega in the fourth quarter for a 15 yard touchdown, but it would prove not enough.

The Battlin' Bears secured the upset with a 34-21 victory.

At the beginning of the season, it seemed that the Battlin' Bears had three potential starting quarterbacks. Jacob Bakken has since clinched the starting spot and for good reason. Bakken threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns with 16 completions on 24 attempts. He also put in an additional 51 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Lucas Overton led the team in receptions as he pulled in six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Max Gray hauled in two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Darneail Jenkins secured a touchdown of his own on two receptions for 52 yards.

Ryder Rice paved the way on defense with a fierce pass rush. He recorded three sacks on six tackles. Kirk Durtsche led the team in tackles with 11. Keenan Fagan hauled in an interception which gives him four on the year.

The Battlin' Bears look to carry this momentum into next week's game as they face off against Montana-State Northern during Rocky's Homecoming festivities. That game will take place on Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
