No.17 Rocky Football Defeats Eastern Oregon 28-6 Behind Strong Defensive Effort

BILLINGS, Mont., Oct 8, 2022- Battlin' Bears football won their fourth straight game Saturday defeating Eastern Oregon 28-6.

The Battlin' Bears defense was excellent all afternoon as they forced five interceptions, only allowed 84 yards through the air, and most importantly, holding the Mountaineers to two field goals and no touchdowns on the day.

Prince Johnson grabbed the first of his two interceptions on Eastern's first drive on offense. Two drives later, Joseph Dwyer would take an end around hand off to the outside and outrun the Mountaineer defense into the endzone from seven yards away, giving Rocky a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Kaysan Barnett grabbed the second interception of the day to open up the second quarter to push him into the lead in the Frontier Conference with four interceptions on the season. Eastern Oregon's Josh Mendoza would eventually join Kaysan Barnett in the top ranks of interceptions in the conference, as the next play Mendoza would grab the second of his three total interceptions he would grab during the game, also giving him four total on the season. Mendoza's second interception would give the Mountaineers the ball on Rocky's 15 yard line, but the Battlin' Bears defense would wall up and force Eastern Oregon into a field goal, putting the score at 7-3 midway through the second quarter. George Tribble Jr. would respond to the turnover on the previous drive by finding DeNiro Killian Jr. for 29 yards to get Rocky within the redzone. Zaire Wilcox would capitalize that drive with an eight yard touchdown, giving Rocky a 14-3 lead, which would be the score that held through the rest of the half.

Prince Johnson would open up the second half with his second interception of the day, but Eastern Oregon would respond again as Josh Mendoza would grab his third interception of the day deep into Eastern's territory. Eastern's following possession would result in the third straight drive ending in an interception, as Jayden Fletcher steps in front of a Tanner Sweek pass and runs it back to the endzone to give Rocky a 21-3 lead in the third quarter. Eastern Oregon would put together their best drive of the day on the next drive following the pick-six, resulting in a 35 yard field goal by Ethan Cutler to cut the deficit to 21-6.

Rocky's offense would control the ball throughout much of the fourth quarter, putting together a long drive to open up the fourth quarter that ended in a 2 yard rushing touchdown by George Tribble Jr. to give Rocky a 28-6 lead. After trading punts, Rocky's defense would force it's fifth interception of the day, as Brail Lipford grabs an overthrown pass by Carson Bohning to seal the victory for the Battlin' Bears.

George Tribble Jr. would finish 9/19 on the day for 154 yards and three interceptions, as well as rushed eight times for 46 yards and a touchdown. Zaire Wilcox rushed 22 times for 80 yards and Andrew Simon had four receptions for 58 yards. Nolan McCafferty totaled 10 tackles on the day, including 1.5 tackles for loss.

Tanner Sweek ended the game 8/20 for 80 yards and four interceptions, adding nine rushes for 47 yards before Carson Bohning took over in the fourth quarter. Anthony Peterson rushed 13 times for 50 yards and linebacker Solo Taylor totaled 10 tackles to lead the Mountaineers.

The Battlin' Bears (5-1) goes into a bye week before they take on Carroll College on October 22nd in Helena.
