Rocky Women’s Basketball Holds off Hot Shooting By San Diego Christian to Win 72-59

CHANDLER, Ariz. Dec. 21, 2022- Rocky Women's Basketball took their second victory of the 2022 Cactus Classic after defeating San Diego Christian College 72-59 Wednesday evening.

The first half was all Battlin' Bears, as Rocky took a 35-18 lead into the break, led by 10 first half points from Morgan Baird off the bench. The Battlin' Bears hit four threes in the second quarter in the midst of a 22-8 run.

The three pointers started flying for San Diego Christian coming out of the locker room in the second half, as the Hawks would hit nine three pointers in the second half alone to bring themselves back into the game. A three pointer by the Hawk's Mamaeia Makoni would cut the Battlin' Bears' lead to five with only five minutes left in the game. Two made free throws, followed by a fast break layup by Gracee Lekvold gave the Battlin' Bears a bit more of a cushion as they would hold onto a double digit lead to take the victory.

The Battlin' Bears were led by Ky Buell's 16 points, five rebounds, and two steals, Dominique Stephens' 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Morgan Baird's 12 points and three rebounds off the bench. Rocky finished the game shooting 43.6 % from the field (24-55) and 39.3% (11-28) from three point range.

The Hawks were led by 15 points and four threes from Mamaeia Makoni, 14 points and seven rebounds from Brianna Humphries, and 14 points, six assists, and four three pointers from Elaina Martinez off the bench.

The Battlin' Bears (8-3) will take on Rust College on Thursday at 2:00pm (MT) as they look to sweep the Cactus Classic.
