Rocky Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime Against Rust College 65-63

CHANDLER, Ariz. Dec. 22, 2022- Rocky Women's Basketball finished the 2022 Cactus Classic 2-1 after falling 65-63 to Rust College in overtime Thursday afternoon.

The Battlin' Bears came out slow against the high energy Lady Bearcats, as Rust went on an 8-0 between the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter, giving them a 24-14 lead over Rocky. The Battlin' Bears withstood the Rust run, as they found a 18-7 run of their own to give themselves a 32-31 lead before the halftime break.

The Battlin' Bears controlled the third quarter on both sides of the floor, only allowing seven points in the quarter. Kloie Thatcher led the way in the third quarter, hitting a three pointer and getting to the free throw line four times in the quarter, hitting all four attempts, as the Battlin' Bears extended their lead to nine going into the fourth quarter.

The back and forth nature of Thursday's game continued, as the Lady Bearcats scored six unanswered points to open up the fourth quarter. Free throw shooting became key for Rust as they hit 7-8 in the fourth quarter, the final being two made free throws for Rust's Faith Cattouse that tied the game at 58 with 1:16 left, a score that would hold through the rest of regulation. 

Rust would score the first four points of overtime to give them a lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.

The Battlin' Bears were led by Kloie Thatcher, who exited the game early with an injury and returned to score a game high 21 points and grabbed four rebounds. Dominique Stephens finished with 12 points and four rebounds, while Mackenzie Dethman tallied 9 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks while playing all 45 minutes in the game.

The Lady Bearcats were led by 14 points and 13 rebounds from Katie Blackmon and 13 points from Lyric Turner. 

The Battlin' Bears (8-4) return home to host the Green and Gold Classic in the Fortin Education Center next Thursday and Friday with games against Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Dickinson State.
