Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to Carroll College 80-74

Santistevan's double double not enough to overcome the Saints as Rocky drops their sixth consecutive game.

HELENA, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears men pulled within two in the final minute of play, but came up just short losing 80-74 against Carroll College.

Both teams saw foul trouble in the first half, as a combined 21 fouls between both teams were called and a combined 21 free throws were shot by both teams in the first half. The Fighting Saints saw a ton of success in the mid range, but nine offensive rebounds kept the Battlin' Bears within six points going into halftime.

Rocky came out of the locker room ready to go in the second half, as back to back three pointers by Beau Santistevan and Maxim Stephens led an 8-0 run to give Rocky a two point lead early in the second half. Both teams traded baskets for much of the second half, but the reigning NAIA National Player of the Week Andrew Cook took over for the Saints, scoring 15 of his game high 27 points in the second half gave the Saints a six point lead with 1:53 remaining. Tayshawun Bradford subbed in off the bench and immediately hit a contested three pointer to bring the game within four points. After a Saints miss, the Battlin' Bears grab a second chance basket by Beau Santistevan to cut Rocky's deficit to two. 

Andrew Cook came through to seal things for Carroll in the end however, as Trent Rogers grabbed Cook's miss on the following possession, then found Cook again, who threw a floater in to extend Carroll's lead to four with 22 seconds remaining, eventually leading to a six point victory.

"A hard fought game and our guys left everything out there on the floor." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "It was a one possession game in the last 30 seconds. I'm very proud of our effort and how we fought tonight." 

The Battlin' Bears were led by 24 points, 10 rebounds, and four three pointers from Beau Santistevan, 13 points and three rebounds from Kael Robinson, and nine points, seven assists, and four rebounds from Jesse OwensAll 10 Battlin' Bears who entered the game Thursday scored. The Battlin' Bears hit nine three pointers as a team, shooting 37.5 % from deep and 42.9% from the field.

The Saints were led by 27 points, six rebounds, and three assists from Andrew Cook and 22 points, four rebounds and two assists from Jonny Hillman in his return from injury. 

The Battlin' Bears (10-11, 2-7 conf.) return home Saturday to host Montana Western on Saturday.
