Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 24 Carroll College 78-52

Cold shooting night knocks Battlin' Bears to a 2-2 record in Frontier Conference play.

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears stumble out of the gates against No. 24 Carroll College, leading to a 78-52 defeat.

Another slow start by the Battlin' Bears put them in an 18-point deficit at halftime, after Carroll's Brayden Koch beat the buzzer for a three pointer to leave the score at 33-15 going into the break. Rocky shot 7-30 from the field in the first half and 1-12 from three point range on their way to a season-low score total in a half.

Things didn't get better for the Battlin' Bears out of the halftime break, as the Fighting Saints began the second half on a 19-4 run, getting as large as a 38 point lead midway through the second half on their way to a 26 point victory. The Battlin' Bears 52 points is the lowest in a game of record since a 69-50 loss against Carroll in the 2018-19 season.

"We knew it was going to be a physical game, it always is against them." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "I was disappointed with our lack of aggressiveness in the first half. We played tentatively on the offensive end, which is something we have to fix. We never could find momentum on the offensive side as we missed some open looks that we needed to knock down".

The Battlin' Bears were led by Nick Hart's eight points and six rebounds, four of which were offensive rebounds, Kace Kitchel's eight points and seven rebounds, and seven points from Jesse Owens. The Battlin' Bears shot only 14.3% (3-21) from three point land and 35.6% (21-59) from the field in the defeat.

The Fighting Saints were led by the Frontier Conference's leading scorer Andrew Cook, who scored a game high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Brendan Temple scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Battlin' Bears (10-6, 2-2 conf.) will take on Montana Western in Dillon on Thursday, January 12th.
