Rocky Men’s Basketball Surges Past OUAZ 100-98

GLENDALE, Ariz.- The Rocky men battled through their second consecutive back and forth high scoring affair, coming out on top 100-98 in Arizona.

What was an explosive first half for the Battlin' Bears, shooting 50% from the field and 47% from three, was overshadowed by the Spirit finishing the half shooting 66% from the field and 69% from three. The Battlin' Bears combated that by forcing 12 OUAZ turnovers to hold the deficit to only six as they trailed 59-53 heading into the second half.

Elliott Brooks got the Battlin' Bears going early in the second half, hitting back to back three pointers to cut the deficit to two points in the first minute of play. Both teams traded baskets for the following 10 minutes of play, with OUAZ extending the largest lead by either team in that stretch to seven after a three pointer by Jacob Henry. A.J. Wilson responded with an and-one, cutting the deficit to four with 9:12 left.

The Spirit looked like they may run away with the game, putting together an 8-0 run to get the largest lead of the day at 91-79 entering the final six minutes of play. After Maxim Stephens picked up his fifth foul, freshman Cameron Quinnell entered the game and provided a spark on both ends, immediately draining a three pointer on his first offensive possession, followed by a tough driving layup to bring the deficit back into single digits. After OUAZ's Jayce Cutchings hit both of his free throws to bring their lead back to 11 with 4:44 remaining.

Rocky put their heads down and showed the fans at ACU Event Center that the Battlin' Bears have some serious talent early in the season by rattling off a 12-0 run over the next three minutes of play to grab a one point lead with 1:34 left. After a timeout by the Battlin' Bears, Jesse Owens hit one of the biggest shots of the season so far, a three pointer at the top of the arc to give Rocky a 99-97 lead with a minute remaining. The Rocky men stepped up defensively, forcing a three point miss and kept the Spirit away from the offensive rebound. OUAZ was able to force a turnover on the next Battlin' Bear possession, giving them another opportunity, but their shot resulted in another missed three pointer. Kael Robinson came down for a hard fought rebound, his 10th of the game, and pushed the ball ahead to Elliott Brooks, who was fouled with four seconds remaining in the game. Brooks hit one of his two free throws to extend the Rocky lead to three. The Battlin' Bears elected to foul down by three points, sending Jacob Henry to the free throw line. Henry hit his first free throw, but missed the second with 2.2 seconds remaining. Henry's missed free throw resulted in a long offensive rebound by the Spirit who got off a final shot to try and tie the game, but the freshman Cameron Quinnell skied up for the game sealing block to secure a two point victory.

The Battlin' Bears finished with five scorers in double figures, led by 22 points from A.J. Wilson. Wilson also grabbed nine rebounds, three assists, and swiped two steals. Kael Robinson continued a strong start to the season, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Cameron Quinnell finished with 15 points and five rebounds off the bench. Jesse Owens tied his career high with eight assists, adding 12 points and two steals as well.

The Rocky men will take a week off of play, before returning to action for their home opener against MSU Billings on November 15th. Tip off will be at 7:30pm.
