Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

No. 22-Ranked Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls Late to No. 11-Ranked Carroll College

The Battlin' Bears hit nine three pointers but struggle from the field overall in loss to the Fighting Saints

HELENA, Mont.- A defensive battle that saw neither team hold a lead larger than seven, ended Carroll College's way as the Battlin' Bears fell 56-52 in Helena.

Carroll's Jamie Pickens scored the game's first six points to give the Fighting Saints an early lead. Ky Buell rattled off eight points in the quarter to lead Rocky as they fought back from their slow start to take a 16-15 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the second quarter, as the teams combined for 7-26 from the field in the second quarter. Carroll ran with an 8-0 run in the first five minutes of the quarter, as an offensive rebound and putback by Kacy Horton just under the five minute mark gave the Battlin' Bears their first points of the quarter. The teams traded roles, as the Saints then did not have a field goal for the remainder of the quarter, gaining only one more point as the Battlin' Bears took the lead back and went into the locker room up 26-24.

Carroll found rhythm out of the break, beginning the second half on a 7-0 run. Rocky followed immediately with an 8-0 run of their own as the teams remained to go back and forth throughout the third quarter. The teams eventually ended up matching each other, both teams scoring 17 in the quarter as Rocky held another two point lead going into the final quarter.

Ky Buell's fourth three pointer of the game gave the Battlin' Bears a one point lead with 4:21 remaining in the game.  The next two minutes would consist of a 6-0 run by Carroll, led by Kamden Hilborn who took a defensive rebound herself down the court leading to a layup, and dished her seventh assist of the game a couple possessions later to give Carroll a five point lead with a minute remaining. Ky Buell would hit another contested three pointer to bring the deficit down to two, but Hilborn found Pickens again as the shot clock was winding down to seal the Carroll victory.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 17 points, including 5-8 from three point range, and three steals from Ky Buell, 12 points from Gracee Lekvold, and nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals from Kloie Thatcher

The Fighting Saints were led by 22 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks from Jamie Pickens, and eight points each from Kyndall Keller and Kamden Hilborn. Hilborn also dished seven assists and had four steals.

The Battlin' Bears (18-8, 10-4 conf.) will take on No. 15-ranked Montana Western in Dillon on Saturday, February 18th to finish the regular season.
