2023 SEASON PREVIEW: Rocky Women’s Soccer

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears enter the 2023 season coming off of a Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament appearance in the 2022 season. A Rocky squad that saw its offensive struggles in the previous season looks to make a splash in a competitive Cascade Conference during the 2023 season behind some key returners and dynamic newcomers.

On the front lines, the Battlin' Bears returning group will be led by sophomore Laura Kellner, who had 27 shots and 13 shots on goal a season ago, ranking second on the team in both categories. Sophomore and Billings West graduate Emma Lensing only appeared in eight games a season ago due to injury, but was dynamic in her time on the field, scoring two goals on nine shots and will look to add a spark to Rocky's offensive attack. Another Billings area graduate in Ashton Kelsey returns to the rotation as well for her junior season. Newcomers to the forwards group includes Montana High School stars Charlize Davis and Mya Maack.  Maack joins the Battlin' Bears as the all-time leading scorer in Montana high school history after a successful career at Laurel High School. Davis and Maack also played as teammates on the Billings United U19 club, where they led their club to a national championship this past summer.

The midfielders group returns many familiar faces but in different roles in 2023. Junior and co-captain Morgan Maack rotates back after spending much of the 2022 season in a forward position to join the midfielders, along with Mila Allison and Mandi Dallimore, who both filled in as goalkeepers in the 2022 season. The Battlin' Bears also return their top goal scorer from the past two seasons in Halle Labert. Carly Roth, Sana Bath, and Emma Nicholson will all return to the rotation as well after making solid contributions off the bench in their first season's with the Battlin' Bears in 2022. Newcomers in the midfielders group includes Australian freshman Piper Adams-Jones and Helena High School graduate Morgan Hayes

The Battlin' Bears defense will miss the services of graduated captain and all-conference member Shaney McCabe, but returns a solid group that will look to replicate a 2022 defense that gave up less than a goal a game (0.94 GAA). Leading the defense in 2023 will be a pair of returning Australians in junior and co-captain Hannah Lane and junior Tara Appleby, along with redshirt freshmen Megan Baham and Ella Fox. Billings Senior graduate Koral Connelly serves as the only newcomer to a strong defensive backfield.

The Rocky women will have three newcomers battling for the starting job at goalkeeper, in Casper Community College transfer Hannah Trumbull, Clarke University transfer Bailee Walls, and a freshman from Emmanuel College in Australia, Amber Wilkinson. Trumbull recorded 31 saves with an .816 save percentage in her freshman season at Dakota Wesleyan before transfering, while Walls recorded 43 saves at Ohlone College in seven starts in the 2019-20 season. Wilkinson earned NPL U23 Player of the Year honors in 2022 before beginning her collegiate career at Rocky this fall.

The Battlin' Bears begin their non-conference schedule with a matchup against University of Providence on Thursday, August 17th. The Rocky women went 1-0-1 against the Argos a season ago in conference play. The tie in the second matchup of the season broke an 11 game win streak against the Argos dating back to 2016.
